Chapter 4: Whispers in the Hall

Elena moved through the shadowy corridors of the estate like a ghost, her burgundy velvet dress gathered tightly in her hands to muffle the sound of her footsteps. She carried Lily, who was still groggy from the sedative, her small arms wrapped weakly around her mother's neck. Every shadow seemed to stretch into a threat, and every tick of the antique grandfather clocks echoed like a drumbeat of impending doom. The main exit was heavily guarded by security personnel loyal to Eleanor, meaning Elena had to find the old servants' stairwell at the back of the East Wing. Her breathing was controlled, rhythmic, and shallow as she navigated the unfamiliar labyrinth of the mansion. The Vance estate was designed to keep people out, but tonight, it had transformed into a gilded cage meant to keep them trapped inside.

A sudden soft click of a door opening down the hall froze Elena in her tracks. She ducked into an intersecting alcove, pressing her back flat against the cold stone wall, holding her breath. Footsteps approached, accompanied by the distinct rustle of silk and the rhythmic clicking of heels. Eleanor Vance’s voice cut through the quiet air, speaking in a harsh whisper to an unseen companion. "Search every guest room on this floor. If she attempts to use the service elevator, cut the power immediately. I want them found before dawn." Elena’s heart hammered against her ribs. She tightened her grip on Lily, who stirred slightly in her sleep, murmuring an incoherent, frightened sound. Elena pressed a soft kiss to her daughter's forehead, silently praying for strength. The footsteps drew closer, paused just outside the alcove, and then continued down the main corridor.

As soon as the sound faded, Elena slipped out of the alcove and hurried toward the heavy oak service door at the end of the hall. She pushed it open, revealing a steep, winding stone staircase descending into darkness. Without hesitation, she stepped inside and let the heavy door click shut behind her. The air down here was damp and smelled of old stone and dust, a stark contrast to the polished luxury of the upper floors. As she descended step by step, the distant sound of doors opening and closing above confirmed that the search was intensifying. Elena knew she had only minutes before they realized she was using the basement exit. Her muscles burned with exhaustion, but the fierce maternal instinct driving her forward blocked out all pain. She had to reach the perimeter fence before sunrise.
