Chapter 11: The Subpoena

The morning sun broke through the heavy gray clouds, casting a sharp, clinical light over the imposing glass-and-steel facade of the Vance Global headquarters downtown. Inside the executive boardroom on the fiftieth floor, the atmosphere was thick with tension. Eleanor Vance sat at the head of the polished mahogany conference table, her emerald silk dress immaculate and her pearl necklaces gleaming coldly. Her legal team sat on either side, flipping nervously through emergency injunctions and corporate filings. The doors swung open abruptly without a knock, and two federal marshals in dark suits stepped into the room, flanked by local law enforcement. One of the marshals stepped forward, holding out an official document with a federal seal. "Eleanor Vance, you are hereby served with a federal subpoena and a temporary asset-freezing order issued by the U.S. District Court," the marshal announced, his voice echoing authoritatively across the silent room.

Eleanor did not flinch. She slowly lowered the gold-rimmed reading glasses from her face, her stern expression hardening into a mask of calculated fury. She looked past the marshals to see Julian standing near the doorway, flanked by Arthur Pendelton and Elena, who held Lily’s hand tightly. Eleanor’s gaze locked onto her son, her eyes burning with incandescent betrayal. "You pathetic, spineless traitor," Eleanor hissed, her voice cutting like glass. Julian met his mother's gaze without shrinking back, his jaw set in quiet, unshakable resolve. "No, Mother," Julian replied steadily, his voice clear and resonant in the cavernous room. "I am finally a father." Elena stood beside him, her composure absolute. The years of fear and subjugation were over. The Vance dynasty's empire of glass was about to shatter completely.

The lead marshal stepped between them, gesturing to the federal documents spread across the table. "This facility is now under federal jurisdiction. All corporate accounts, communication servers, and administrative records are seized effective immediately. Any attempt to obstruct this investigation will result in immediate detention." Whispers of panic erupted among the board members as attorneys scrambled to gather their briefcases and flee the room. Eleanor rose slowly from her chair, her regal posture unwavering even as her empire collapsed around her. She smoothed the front of her emerald dress, giving Elena one final, venomous look before turning toward her private exit. But the federal marshals stepped forward, blocking her path. "You are required to remain for questioning, Mrs. Vance," the marshal stated flatly. The trap had finally snapped shut.
