Chapter 2

The heavy silence in the venue was deafening as Marcus slowly untied the red string of the manila folder. Every eye in the room was glued to his hands. Maya stood motionless under the floral arch, the vibrant white flowers in her hands feeling heavy as lead. She knew what documents were inside those pages, and she knew that the life she had carefully constructed over the past three years was about to collapse entirely.
Marcus pulled out the first crisp sheet of paper. His eyes scanned the lines of text, moving rapidly from left to right. The initial confusion on his face slowly morphed into a chilling, absolute stillness. It was a corporate partnership agreement bearing Maya’s signature, alongside millions of dollars in venture capital transfers originating from an account belonging to the man standing at the end of the aisle.
"Maya," Marcus breathed, his voice barely a whisper as he stood back up, holding the papers aloft. "Is this your signature?"
Maya looked at the paper from a distance, her lips parting, but no sound came out. She nodded imperceptibly, a single tear escaping her eye and tracking down her cheek.
"You didn't just borrow money," Marcus said, his tone devoid of anger now, replaced by a profound, hollow shock. "You built your entire aesthetic, your business, and this very wedding on embezzled funds."
The intruder, whose name was revealed to be Julian, crossed his arms with a smug, vindictive smile.
"She thought she could ditch me once the corporate merger went through," Julian announced to the stunned wedding guests, pivoting on his heel to address the crowd. "She used my capital to launch her tech startup, promised me half the equity, and then blocked my calls the moment she hooked up with this wealthy golden boy."
Several family members in the front row gasped aloud. Maya’s mother pressed a hand to her mouth, shaking her head in utter disbelief.
"Julian, that is a lie," Maya finally found her voice, stepping forward with a fierce urgency. "You acquired those funds through illicit schemes of your own. You wanted me to be the fall guy. I used that money to keep the business afloat, yes, but I was trying to pay you back legally before you threatened my family."
Julian laughed bitterly, stepping closer despite the groomsmen holding their ground.
"Show them the annexes in that folder, Marcus," Julian goaded. "Show them the shell company she registered last month with your home address on it. She was planning to frame you next."
Marcus’s head snapped toward Maya, his eyes wide with a mixture of betrayal and sudden, sharp terror. He flipped frantically through the remaining pages until his gaze landed on a notarized document featuring his own forged signature on a property transfer deed.
"You forged my signature?" Marcus asked, his voice cracking slightly as the reality of the betrayal set in.

Before Maya could formulate a defense, the heavy double wooden doors at the entrance swung open once more, and the unmistakable sound of sirens wailed sharply outside the venue.
