Chapter 1

The crystal chandelier overhead cast a brilliant, unforgiving light across the sea of stunned faces. Maya gripped her white floral bouquet so tightly that her knuckles turned stark white. Beside her, Marcus stood frozen, his crisp white tuxedo jacket and black lapels standing out sharply against the sudden chill in the air.
At the entrance, Marcus—the man in the casual white polo shirt—lowered his pointing hand slightly, his chest heaving with raw rage. The double wooden doors stood wide open behind him, framing the bright afternoon light outside.
"I invested so much in this woman!" Marcus shouted, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings of the hall. "She cannot marry another man!"
Maya’s radiant smile evaporated instantly, replaced by a pale, trembling mask of dread. She looked down at her off-the-shoulder lace gown, unable to meet the eyes of the seated guests who had suddenly begun whispering anxiously among themselves.
Marcus, the groom, turned slowly toward his bride, his jaw clenched in disbelief.
"Maya, what is he talking about?" Marcus asked, his voice dangerously low, stripped of all warmth. "What investment?"
Maya swallowed hard, her eyes pooling with unshed tears as she looked up at the man she was supposed to spend her life with.
"Marcus, please, it’s not what it sounds like," Maya whispered, her voice shaking violently. "He’s twisting the truth. Just let me explain later, in private."
"No, you’re not explaining it later!" the intruder yelled, marching halfway down the central aisle before a pair of groomsmen stepped forward to block his path. "Tell them the truth, Maya! Tell them whose money paid for this designer dress! Tell them who funded your entire life for the last three years while you pretended to be a self-made woman!"
Marcus stepped between Maya and the intruder, holding up a palm.
"Stop right there," Marcus warned, his voice steady despite the chaos erupting around them. "If you have something to say, say it with proof. Otherwise, get out of this venue right now."
The intruder reached into the back pocket of his trousers, pulled out a thick manila folder, and tossed it violently onto the polished wooden floor at Marcus's feet.
"There’s your proof," the intruder snarled. "Bank statements, wire transfers, and signed contracts. She’s knee-deep in my fraud, and she used you for your clean reputation to wash her hands clean."

Marcus looked down slowly at the folder resting near his shiny black shoes, his heart pounding against his ribs as he slowly knelt to pick it up.
