Chapter 14

David Vance stood outside the reinforced glass window of the vault, looking in at his son with an expression that combined profound disappointment and ruthless pragmatism. He picked up the intercom handset, and his voice echoed clearly inside the confined space.

"It’s over, Marcus," David said calmly through the speaker. "You can't fight an institution that you helped build. Hand over the physical ledgers when the guards open the door, and we can still handle this quietly within the family."

Marcus stood beside the stainless-steel table, watching the progress bar on the computer terminal tick upward: 78%... 85%... 92%...

"You built this firm on lies and ruined countless innocent people to protect your wealth, Dad," Marcus replied into the internal microphone, his voice steady and resolute. "It ends today."

"You're a fool," David snapped, his calm demeanor finally cracking. "Without this firm, without our name, you are nothing!"

"I'd rather be nothing than a thief," Marcus said firmly.

The progress bar on the screen flashed green: 100% Upload Complete. Transmission Successful.

At that exact moment, the heavy exterior doors of the subterranean bank level burst open with a loud crash. Shouts echoed down the concrete hallway as a team of federal agents in tactical vests, led by two senior investigators from the federal prosecutor's office, flooded into the room.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Drop your weapons and step away from the vault!" the lead agent commanded, raising his badge as he pointed directly at David Vance and the security guards.

David’s face drained of color as he turned around, realizing too late that the federal raid had been triggered automatically by the digital submission Marcus had just uploaded.

One of the federal agents stepped up to the electronic control panel of Vault 409, punching in an override code. The heavy steel door hissed, unlatching and swinging wide open.

Marcus stepped out of the vault, holding the black leather ledger and the flash drive in his hands. He walked straight past his father—who was now being placed in handcuffs by the federal agents—without casting a single glance backward.

The lead investigator approached Marcus, taking the ledger and the flash drive into protective custody.

"Mr. Vance, thank you," the investigator said formally. "We’ve received the complete archive. The warrants for David Vance and Julian Vance are already active. Furthermore, our review of the preliminary data confirms that Maya Lin was coerced under severe duress and framed as the primary scapegoat."

Marcus let out a long breath he felt like he had been holding for days.

"Where is she?" Marcus asked urgently.

"She’s being released from federal custody as we speak," the investigator replied. "She's waiting for you outside the main entrance."
