THE VEIL OF DECEPTION / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5

"Mr. Sterling? The guests are beginning to murmur in the chapel," the wedding coordinator announced, stepping into the antechamber before freezing in place. Her eyes widened as she took in Clara’s ruined dress, Victoria’s rigid posture, and Elena standing near the wardrobe in a completely different bridal gown. The clipboard slipped from the coordinator’s fingers, clattering loudly against the marble floor.

"There is no wedding today," Victoria stated smoothly, stepping forward to bridge the awkward gap before the coordinator could ask the dozen questions forming in her panicked mind. "Inform the guests that unforeseen family circumstances have forced a postponement. Ensure everyone is escorted to the exit and provide our apologies."

The coordinator swallowed hard, her professional training battling the sheer surrealism of the moment. She looked at Julian for confirmation, but Julian remained silent, his gaze fixed on the floorboards where Clara’s lace had been shredded. Without a word from the groom, the coordinator nodded stiffly, turned on her heel, and retreated down the hallway to manage the disaster.

Clara didn't wait for the commotion to settle. Accompanied by Maya and the second bridesmaid, she walked past the open double doors, leaving the Sterling estate behind. Every step away from the altar felt like shedding a heavy burden. The shredded lace of her dress dragged behind her like a discarded ghost, marking the end of a chapter she never wanted to revisit.

Inside the antechamber, the silence returned, sharper and more suffocating than before. Julian finally broke his stillness, turning to face his mother with an expression that made even Victoria take a subtle step back. The hesitation in his eyes had vanished, replaced by a cold, unfamiliar resolve.

"You think you’ve won," Julian said softly, his voice barely above a whisper, yet it resonated through the large room with terrifying clarity. "You think you can pull the strings of everyone’s lives forever. But you just destroyed the only real thing I had left."

"I saved you from a mistake," Victoria insisted, though for the first time, a flicker of genuine uncertainty crossed her features. "In five years, you will thank me."

"I will never thank you," Julian replied, pulling the black bow tie from his neck and letting it drop to the floor. He turned his attention to Elena, who shrank back slightly under his intense gaze. "And you... whoever put you up to this, whatever promises my mother made you—it’s over. Leave."

Elena gripped the fabric of her sparkly gown, looking frantically at Victoria for rescue. But Victoria was no longer looking at the chess pieces; she was realizing that her son had just kicked the board completely over. The Sterling empire, built on absolute control, had just suffered its first fatal crack, and the fallout was only beginning.
