Chapter 11

Victoria gripped the edge of the heavy oak door, her knuckles turning white beneath her skin. She looked past Clara to the two bailiffs standing quietly at the edge of the porch, then back to the older gentleman holding the leather briefcase. The cold realization of what was happening began to settle in her chest, heavy and suffocating.
"You are trespassing," Victoria said, though the command lacked its usual absolute authority. "Leave this property immediately, or I will have security remove you."
"Your security guards left this morning, Victoria," Clara said evenly, stepping further into the grand foyer without waiting for an invitation. "They haven't been paid in three weeks. Much like the maintenance crew, the landscapers, and the catering staff from yesterday's aborted disaster."
The older gentleman stepped past Clara, opening the leather briefcase with quiet precision. He pulled out a thick sheaf of legal documents bound with blue ribbon and held them out toward the mistress of the house. Victoria refused to take them, keeping her hands firmly at her sides.
"My name is David Vance," the lawyer said smoothly, his tone professional and entirely unbothered by Victoria's glare. "I am representing the Vance estate. As of 9:00 AM this morning, formal notice of default has been filed with the county clerk regarding the longstanding financial obligations tied to the Sterling & Vance Holdings agreement of 1998."
Victoria’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. "That agreement was sealed. It contains confidentiality clauses that protect our enterprise from public scrutiny."
"It protected your enterprise as long as the terms of mutual respect and alliance were honored," David corrected, turning a page to reveal a highlighted section of the parchment. "However, section twelve clearly dictates that if a marriage contract between our families is maliciously sabotaged or terminated through bad faith by a Sterling representative—such as the public destruction of bridal property and intentional psychological coercion—the collateral clause triggers immediately."
David paused, letting the silence emphasize the magnitude of his words.

"The estate, the grounds, the primary accounts, and all subsidiary assets legally revert to the Vance family effective immediately. You have forty-eight hours to vacate the premises."
Victoria stared at the papers, her mind desperately calculating angles of defense that no longer existed. The empire she had spent decades protecting, manipulating, and bleeding for was slipping through her fingers like dry sand. She had played every card in her deck, believing her control was absolute, only to discover she had been playing a game she legally lost years ago.
