Chapter 14 - The Clearing Sky

The storm clouds that had hung heavy over the industrial harbor all afternoon finally began to break, allowing weak, golden rays of late-afternoon sunlight to pierce the thick fog. Outside the grain silo, two police cruisers and a Coast Guard transport vehicle sat with their emergency lights still flashing against the wet asphalt.

Marcus sat hunched over on the bumper of the Coast Guard truck, a paramedic holding a cold compress against his bruised neck while a detective quietly took his preliminary statement. David nodded slowly, staring out across the glittering surface of the river where the fog was slowly burning away. "It's safe, Dad. But the house is going to feel very different from now on."

Elena walked up slowly, stopping a few feet away from them. She looked down at the ground, her face pale, holding a small overnight bag she had packed from the trunk of the car.

"I'm leaving," Elena said, her voice barely louder than a whisper. "I called a cab to meet me at the end of the access road. I won't be coming back to the house."
