Chapter 11 - The Old Man's Gambit

The cold coastal wind whipped Arthur’s grey hair across his weathered forehead as he stepped out of the sedan. He gripped the heavy iron tire iron with both hands, his knuckles aching from the arthritis in his joints, but his grip remained firm and unwavering. He slammed the car door shut, leaving Clara safely locked inside the back seat, sleeping soundly through the rising storm.
Elena scrambled out of the passenger side, hurrying after him through the wet gravel. "Arthur, stop! You can't go in there with them! Vance has armed men!"
Arthur didn't even slow down. He marched across the weed-choked asphalt toward the rusted loading bay of the grain silo, his eyes fixed on the dim circle of yellow light spilling out from the partially open door. The old man’s face was carved from pure stone, bearing the relentless resilience of a generation that had survived world wars and economic ruin.
"My son is inside," Arthur said without turning back. "And so is the piece of trash who helped destroy this family. I am done running, Elena."
Inside the silo, Vance was still laughing softly at David’s defiance when the heavy metallic crunch of footsteps echoed from the loading bay entrance. Vance stopped laughing, his eyes darting toward the open doorway. Bruno lowered his gun from the back of David’s head for a fraction of a second, shifting his aim toward the shadows outside.
"Drop the weapon, Bruno," Arthur’s voice boomed through the cavernous space, carrying the iron-clad authority of a retired drill sergeant. "Or I swear to God I will crack your skull wide open before you can pull that trigger."
Bruno sneered, turning his heavy frame toward the doorway where Arthur stood framed by the gray fog. "Old man, you need to turn around and walk away before you—"
Before Bruno could finish his sentence, Arthur lunged forward with surprising speed for his age. He didn't aim for the gunman; instead, he hurled the heavy iron tire iron straight toward the metal desk where the leather briefcase filled with cash sat wide open.
The iron bar struck the edge of the metal desk with a deafening clang, scattering stacks of hundred-dollar bills across the concrete floor like autumn leaves.
Marcus shrieked, instantly dropping to his knees and scrambling frantically across the floor to grab the flying cash. "My money! Get the money!"
The sudden chaos shattered the tension in the room. Vance cursed loudly, lunging forward to grab Marcus by the collar of his hoodie, while Bruno momentarily lost his concentration, turning his head to watch the money scatter.
That split-second distraction was all David needed.

With explosive speed, David dropped his weight, spun around on his heel, and drove his elbow straight into Bruno’s ribs with bone-crushing force.
