Chapter 7

Morning sunlight poured through the large windows of Clara and Mark’s kitchen, casting a warm, golden glow over the wooden table where their laptop sat open. The official digital confirmation from the state land registry and the EPA compliance division lit up the screen in bold green text. The transfer was permanent, irrevocable, and fully verified.
Mark set two mugs of steaming coffee on the table, sliding one toward Clara, who was sitting comfortably in her wooden armchair, gently rubbing her swollen belly. “The EPA investigators just filed the formal seizure notice against Eleanor’s personal estate,” Mark said, pulling out a chair and sitting down opposite her. “Her corporate accounts have been frozen, and the municipal court has issued a preliminary asset-freezing order covering her primary residence, her vehicles, and her private trust accounts.”
Clara took a slow sip of her coffee, her expression calm and composed. “She must be losing her mind. Eleanor’s entire identity is tied to her wealth and her control over others. Stripping her of her fortune is the only way to make her understand the scale of the damage she caused.”
“What happens next?” Mark asked, leaning forward, his eyes full of concern for his wife and their future. “Will she try to retaliate legally?”
“There are no legal avenues left for her,” Clara replied, shaking her head. “The documentation we provided proves not only the environmental violations on Lot 42, but also the falsification of corporate records spanning over two decades. If she tries to fight it in court, the federal prosecutor’s office will immediately escalate the civil penalties into criminal fraud charges.”
Mark let out a long breath, a visible weight lifting from his shoulders. “It’s really over, isn’t it?”
“For us, yes,” Clara said softly, resting her hand over Mark’s calloused fingers. “For Eleanor, the reckoning is only just beginning.”
Later that morning, they received a phone call from an unfamiliar number. Clara answered, putting the call on speaker so Mark could hear.
“Is this Clara Vance?” a calm, professional voice asked.
“Yes, speaking,” Clara replied evenly.
“This is Director Halloway with the Federal Environmental Protection Agency. We are reaching out regarding the remediation order for Lot 42. We have received the certified documentation from your legal counsel, along with the statutory guarantor disclosures. We are currently executing the warrant at Eleanor Vance’s primary residence. She has requested a supervised meeting with you and Mr. Vance before she surrenders to federal custody. She claims she has information regarding the historical partnership dissolution that may be of interest to you.”

Clara exchanged a quick, questioning glance with Mark. The mention of the historical partnership brought back the unresolved mysteries surrounding her father’s death twenty-five years ago. Eleanor was clearly desperate, willing to trade ancient secrets in exchange for a measure of mercy or leverage.
“Tell her we will be at the corporate headquarters in one hour,” Clara said firmly.
