Chapter 10

Two weeks later, the federal district courtroom in downtown was packed to capacity. Reporters, financial analysts, and curious onlookers filled the wooden benches, all eager to witness the final chapter of the sprawling corporate corruption scandal surrounding Vance Enterprises. At the defense table sat Eleanor Vance, wearing a simple gray prison jumpsuit instead of her usual tailored business suit. Her hair was unstyled, and she stared straight ahead with a blank, resigned expression.
Across the aisle, Clara and Mark sat in the front row of the gallery. Clara wore her light beige sweater, her pregnancy now visibly advanced, embodying a quiet resilience that contrasted sharply with the chaotic media circus surrounding them.
The federal judge, a stern man with silver hair and wire-rimmed glasses, adjusted his microphone before speaking. “In the matter of the United States versus Eleanor Vance, et al., the court has reviewed the final sentencing recommendations submitted by the federal prosecutor’s office, along with the newly recovered evidence regarding historical corporate conspiracy and environmental negligence.”
The courtroom fell into absolute silence. Every eye turned toward the bench.
“Due to the catastrophic environmental toxicity associated with Lot 42, combined with the proven falsification of corporate safety records and the historical suppression of whistleblower testimony, this court finds the defendant, Eleanor Vance, guilty on all counts of criminal negligence, corporate fraud, and obstruction of justice.”

The judge paused, letting the heavy words settle over the courtroom before delivering the sentence. “Eleanor Vance is hereby sentenced to twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole. Furthermore, all remaining personal assets, trust funds, and hidden corporate accounts are hereby seized by the federal government to immediately fund the complete environmental cleanup and soil remediation of Lot 42 and the surrounding municipal watershed.”
A low murmur rippled through the gallery as the gavel came down with a sharp, echoing crack. Eleanor did not flinch, nor did she look back at the cameras flashing behind her. Two federal marshals stood up on either side of her, gently placing handcuffs on her wrists and leading her away through the private exit door at the back of the courtroom. The empire of Vance Enterprises had officially fallen, reduced to dust by the very forces of truth and accountability it had tried for decades to suppress.
