Chapter 2: The Cracking Façade

Mark stared at the hotel manager, his mouth hanging open like a broken hinge.
""Mom... what are you talking about?"" Mark stammered, his eyes darting frantically between the black card and the bowing manager. ""Why is everyone looking at you? Who is this guy?""
Chloe stepped forward, her voice rising an octave into sharp, defensive indignation. ""This is absurd! This is a joke! Tell them who we are, Mark! Tell them we booked through the luxury concierge network! That card is just a promotional gimmick!""
She wheeled on Margaret, her eyes wide with mounting panic. ""You stole that card out of someone’s suite, didn't you? Harrison, call security right now! This woman is an impostor!""
Mr. Harrison straightened up, his face hardening into granite. ""Mrs. Mark Vance, I suggest you lower your voice. You are speaking to Margaret Castile Vance, the founder and majority shareholder of Pacific View Hospitality Group, which owns this property and thirty-four other luxury resorts along the Eastern Seaboard.""
Chloe took a step back, her heels clacking awkwardly on the marble, as if the floor had suddenly dropped three feet beneath her.
""No..."" Chloe whispered, clutching her leather clutch against her stomach. ""No, Mark... you said... you told me your parents were blue-collar nobodies who lived on social security.""
Mark’s face had drained of all color. The tan on his skin looked like grey clay.
""Mom,"" Mark croaked, his hands trembling. ""You... you told me Dad’s company went under during the crash.""
Margaret looked at her son—her only son, for whom she had paid private school tuitions, Ivy League debts, and three separate business venture bailouts, all while watching him steadily push her into the dark corner of his life because he was ashamed of her simple clothes and unpretentious manners.
""Your father’s manufacturing business didn't go under, Mark,"" Margaret said quietly. ""He diversified into commercial land trusts forty years ago. When he died eight years ago, he left the entire portfolio to me in an irrevocable family trust.""
Margaret turned her gaze toward Chloe, whose face was now mottled with red spots of humiliation.
""You spent three years telling Mark that I was an anchor around his neck, Chloe,"" Margaret continued, her voice devoid of theatrical drama, ringing with clean, surgical truth. ""You refused to let me sit at the family table during Thanksgiving. You told my grandchildren that their grandmother was a maid who didn't know how to speak to cultured people.""
""I... I was joking, Mrs. Vance!"" Chloe cried, her eyes darting toward the other guests in the lobby who had stopped to watch. ""Mark, tell her! It was just family banter!""
Margaret picked up the black card from the marble counter.

""Tell them the truth first, Mark,"" Margaret said softly. ""Tell them you haven't made a mortgage payment on your house in six months because you spent your children's college fund leasing that sports car outside.""
