Chapter 14: The Quiet Garden

Five years passed.

Margaret Vance spent her final years living in the sunny cottage on the grounds of the Millersburg Guild, surrounded by her grandchildren, the sound of singing saws, and the sweet smell of cedar shavings.

She did not die in a sterile hospital room surrounded by corporate monitors.

She passed away peacefully on a warm Sunday morning in September, resting in her hand-carved oak bed, her hands held gently by Mark, Noah, and Clara, with the morning breeze blowing through the open window carrying the scent of wild honeysuckle.

Her memorial service was held on the high lawn overlooking the mill pond.

Over five hundred people attended: hotel housekeepers from Florida, master sawyers from Ohio, apprentice carpenters, university fellows, and community leaders whose lives had been touched by her quiet, boundless generosity.

They laid her to rest beside Arthur beneath the shade of the ancient sugar maple, where the autumn leaves fell like golden coins over the rich, dark earth.

Beside the headstone, Mark knelt in the grass, holding the hand-carved oak box he had made for her so many years ago.

Inside the box lay the black titanium card reading **OWNER**.

Mark did not keep the card. He placed it gently into the soil beneath the headstone, covering it with rich, dark earth, pressing it down with his calloused palms.
