Chapter 5 - The Subterranean Countdown and the Hidden Vault

The green emergency lights cast long, distorted shadows across the marble floor as the low, mechanical rumble continued to vibrate upward through the foundations of the mansion. Eleanor’s chilling words hung in the suffocating air: In ten minutes, everything downstairs—and everyone who knows about it—goes up in flames.
“You’re bluffing,” Clara screamed, her voice cracking as she rushed toward the front doors and yanked frantically at the handle, only to find them completely deadlocked by the system shutdown. “The power is out! There’s no fire! You’re both insane!”
“Am I?” Eleanor tilted her head, her styled grey hair catching the eerie green glare. She reached into the pocket of her tweed jacket and pulled out a small, heavy brass key—an old-fashioned physical key that didn’t rely on digital smart-home wiring. “Julian knew long ago that technology fails. That’s why he kept the mechanical override analog backup right here.”
Maya didn’t waste a single second on words. While Clara panicked and Eleanor gloated, Maya moved with the precision of a trained corporate sniper. She dropped to her knees beside the biometric scanner panel, pried open the metal casing with the sharp heel of her designer shoe, and exposed the internal wiring board.
“What are you doing?” Eleanor’s smile faltered slightly as she watched Maya violently rip a bundle of fiber-optic cables from their housing. “You’ll fry the entire manual circuit! You can’t stop the purge manually!”
“Watch me,” Maya said coldly. She pulled a small titanium data-diagnostic drive from the lining of her royal blue evening dress—a tool she carried everywhere after a previous corporate espionage attempt in London—and plugged it directly into the raw motherboard of the smart-home terminal.
Instantly, the dying screen flickered back to life, bathing Maya’s face in harsh blue light. Code scrolled past at blinding speeds: OVERRIDE PROTOCOL INITIATED... BYPASSING SUB-ROUTINE FIREWALL... DECRYPTING VAULT ARCHIVES...
“No! Stop her!” Eleanor shrieked, lunging forward with surprising agility for a woman in her sixties, raising the heavy brass key like a weapon to smash against Maya’s hand.
Clara reacted on pure adrenaline. Driven by self-preservation rather than loyalty, Clara tackled Eleanor from the side, sending both women crashing hard onto the marble floor in a tangle of tweed, pearls, and red sequins.
“Get off me, you ungrateful little brat!” Eleanor snarled, striking Clara across the face with the heavy brass key.
“You’re going to blow us all up, you crazy old bat!” Clara shrieked back, wrestling the key away from Eleanor’s grip.
Maya ignored the violent struggle unfolding behind her. Her fingers danced across the virtual keyboard on her tablet, syncing with the direct motherboard link. The data transfer progress bar hit 90%... 95%... 98%...
Then, a new window popped onto the screen, freezing Maya’s blood cold.
It wasn’t just financial ledgers and fake property deeds stored in the basement vault. Attached to the secure folder was a heavily encrypted video file labeled with a date from four years ago—the exact week Julian’s former business partner had mysteriously vanished in international waters.
Maya tapped the file open. The screen displayed a dimly lit room in a private yacht off the coast of Maine. Julian and another man—the missing business partner—were shouting, shoving each other near the open railing of the deck. Then, Julian lunged forward with a heavy iron winch handle, striking the man across the temple before shoving his limp body over the side into the dark, churning ocean.
Maya gasped, the air leaving her lungs as the horrific truth crashed over her. Julian wasn’t just a white-collar thief and a forger.
He was a murderer.
And the primary evidence proving it was stored in the vault directly beneath their feet—a vault that was currently counting down its final three minutes before a self-destruct mechanism incinerated the entire subterranean floor.
Before Maya could download the video file, the screen flashed a blinding red warning: DATA CORRUPTION DETECTED. REMOTE WIPE COMPLETED BY USER J. VANCE.
The progress bar crashed to zero. The video vanished into the digital void.

At that exact moment, a loud, metallic click echoed from beneath the grand staircase as the hidden basement door slowly unlatched itself, hissing as pressurized gas escaped from the dark, cavernous staircase leading down into the abyss.
