Chapter 3 - The Federal Knock and the Collapsing Alibi

The heavy bronze doorbell chimed through the grand foyer, its melodic tone contrasting sharply with the suffocating terror gripping the four occupants inside. Julian stood frozen, his eyes glued to the smart-display where the live video feed showed federal agents stepping onto the porch. Eleanor let out a strangled gasp, her manicured hand clutching her pearls so hard the silk thread snapped, sending small white spheres scattering across the marble floor like frozen teardrops.
“No,” Julian muttered, shaking his head in wild denial. “No, no, no. You didn’t. Maya, you can’t involve federal authorities! This is a private domestic matter! We can handle this privately!”
“Private?” Maya stepped closer to him, her royal blue dress rustling with quiet authority. “You tried to strip me of my life’s work, forge my signature on multi-million dollar real estate deeds, and conspired with your mistress to leave me legally destitute. That isn't a domestic dispute, Julian. That is grand larceny, wire fraud, and conspiracy.”
Clara panicked, her red sequin dress flashing erratically as she spun around and began hammering her fists against the locked iron doors. “Let us out! Open this door right now! I have nothing to do with this! I’m just an interior designer!”
“An interior designer who happens to be the sole beneficiary of a shell corporation receiving stolen capital,” Maya replied coldly, not even deigning to look at Clara.
The doorbell chimed again, louder this time, accompanied by a heavy, authoritative knock on the reinforced oak and iron entry doors.
“FBI! Open up! We have a federal search and seizure warrant!” a deep, commanding voice echoed from the porch.
Maya raised her tablet, tapped the master override icon, and spoke a single command: “Unlock primary entry.”
With a mechanical whir of gears, the heavy iron bolts retracted. Before Julian could lunge toward the threshold to scream for mercy, the doors swung inward. Agent Marcus Vance, a towering, sharp-eyed investigator with the federal white-collar division, stepped into the foyer flanked by three armed agents. His eyes swept the room, taking in Julian’s pale, trembling face, Eleanor’s weeping posture, Clara’s frantic expression, and Maya’s calm, poised demeanor.
“Maya Lincoln?” Agent Vance asked, his voice steady and professional.
“Yes, Agent Vance. Thank you for the prompt response,” Maya replied, extending her hand.
Vance shook it firmly before turning his gaze onto Julian. “Julian Vance-Montgomery?”
“There’s been a mistake!” Julian babbled, his hands flying up in a defensive, pathetic gesture. “My wife—we’re going through a messy divorce! She’s vindictive, she’s manipulating the evidence! This is a civil dispute, not a federal crime!”
Agent Vance pulled a thick manila folder from under his arm and flipped it open, revealing pages of bank ledgers, signed property deeds, and digital footprints.
“Mr. Vance-Montgomery, you are being detained for questioning regarding interstate wire fraud, identity theft, and the fraudulent liquidation of commercial real estate valued at over twelve million dollars,” Vance recited smoothly as two agents stepped forward, their hands hovering over their tactical cuffs.
“Wait, look at her! She set me up!” Julian shrieked, pointing a shaking finger at Maya as the agents grabbed his arms and forced his hands behind his back. “She knew about the sales! She encouraged me to invest! She’s a monster!”
Eleanor burst into genuine tears, sinking to her knees among the scattered pearls. “Please, Agent Vance, I am an elderly woman! I have nothing to do with Julian’s foolish business dealings! I’m just his mother!”
“Mrs. Montgomery, your personal living expenses for the past three years were funded entirely by accounts tied to the fraudulent shell companies,” Vance noted without missing a beat, nodding to a third agent who approached Eleanor with a notebook. “You’ll have plenty of opportunity to explain your financial independence to a federal judge.”
Clara backed away into the shadows of the hallway mirror, her chest heaving underneath her glittering red sequin dress. She thought she had secured a wealthy architect and a luxurious Manhattan penthouse; instead, she was standing in the epicenter of a federal RICO investigation.
Julian was pushed against the mahogany wall, the cold metal of the handcuffs clicking sharply around his wrists. As the agents hauled him toward the open door, he locked eyes with Maya one last time, a look of pure, unadulterated venom twisting his handsome features.
“You think you’ve won, Maya?” Julian spat, his voice dropping into a raspy, menacing growl as he was dragged across the threshold. “You don’t even know what’s hidden in the basement archives.”
May you like
The heavy iron doors slammed shut behind the departing agents and their prisoner, leaving Maya standing alone in the grand foyer with Eleanor and Clara.
