Chapter 14: The Archival Ledger

In late October, the town of Hatteras dedicated *The Thomas Vance Memorial Maritime Archive*—a newly constructed timber-framed library and preservation museum built directly over the historic boat basin.

The archive housed three centuries of hand-drawn boatbuilding blueprints, historical fishing logs, and estuarine research surveys freely open to any student or craftsperson in the world.

Inlaid into the central oak reading table was a simple bronze plaque:

*“A true house is not built on the sand of vanity.*

*It is anchored in truth, held by love, and consecrated to the light.”*

Over four hundred citizens gathered in the hall, breaking fresh bread, drinking hot cider, and celebrating a sanctuary that belonged to the entire community.
