Chapter 10: The Ring in the Heart-Cypress

That autumn, on a crisp, golden evening when the full harvest moon rose over the Atlantic, painting the rolling surf in liquid silver and deep indigo light, Robert led Emily up the winding sand trail to the highest lookout dune overlooking Cape Perkins.

A small fire of seasoned drift-cedar was crackling in the sand pit, its warm orange light dancing across the sea-oats.

Robert reached into his canvas jacket, pulling out a small, hand-carved box made of native Outer Banks juniper wood.

He placed it in Emily’s hands.

Emily opened the lid.

Inside lay a simple, elegant band hand-carved from seasoned heart-cypress salvaged from the original 1880 framing of the guild boat shop, polished to a silky luster with natural beeswax, inlaid with a microscopic ribbon of native coastal copper that caught the firelight like a thin thread of gold.

""In my old life, I thought love was something you bought with expensive jewelry to show off to strangers, Emily,"" Robert said, his voice deep, steady, and filled with unconditional devotion. ""On this island, we shape wood to show that we will stand beside each other through every hurricane until our work on earth is done.""

He took her hand in his, his calloused fingers warm and strong against hers.

""I give you my hands, my labor, and my sacred promise to love you, shelter your life, and serve this shore beside you for as long as I draw breath.""

Emily looked down at the wooden band, feeling its living grain against her skin.

Her eyes filled with tears of radiant, unshakeable joy.

""Yes, Robert,"" Emily whispered, throwing her arms around his neck, pulling him close against her heart. ""With all my soul, yes.""
