Chapter 6

The cold, stagnant air rushing up from the deep-core descent shaft carried the distinct scent of damp earth and rust, chilling Elena to the bone. She stood at the absolute edge of the metal grating, staring down into the dizzying blackness where the flickering red emergency lights pierced the gloom for only a few brief levels before vanishing entirely into the void.
Behind them, the muffled sounds of shouting and heavy boots echoed closer down the main hallway. Julian had breached the secondary security checkpoint; it was only a matter of seconds before they forced their way into the lab.
“Move, Elena!” Thomas barked, grabbing her arm with surprising strength and shoving her toward the vertical service ladder mounted against the slick concrete wall of the shaft. “If Julian gets those launch sequences, humanity doesn’t just lose a facility—we lose the entire genetic archive. Down there is our only leverage.”
Elena stumbled against the cold rungs of the ladder, her dark blue coat catching briefly on a protruding bolt before she managed to steady herself. She looked back up at Thomas, the flickering emergency light casting harsh shadows across his resolute, unreadable face.
“Why should I trust you now, Thomas?” she demanded, her voice echoing hollowly down the massive vertical drop. “You lied about the transport manifest. You traded my colleagues to the board. What makes you think I’ll follow you down into a concrete grave?”
“Because you’re a scientist, Elena, not a politician,” Thomas replied sharply, his eyes darting toward the lab’s reinforced glass door as the muffled sound of a heavy explosive charge rattled the frame. “You care about the data, and the complete pathogen genome is stored on the encrypted drives at Sub-Level 3. If you want to avenge your team, you need to survive long enough to finish the vaccine.”
A blinding flash of light illuminated the hallway outside through the glass, followed by a deafening blast that blew the inner security doors entirely off their hinges. Gray smoke billowed into the pristine laboratory, accompanied by the cold, commanding voice of Julian shouting orders to his armed bodyguards.
“Secure the perimeter! Check the sub-level access!” Julian’s voice cut through the haze, dangerously close.
Thomas didn’t hesitate. He grabbed the emergency control panel on the wall and slammed his fist down onto the manual lockout button, triggering a massive steel guillotine door that began to slide downward to seal the top of the descent shaft.
“Go! Now!” Thomas shouted, diving onto the top rungs of the ladder just as the first armed bodyguard burst through the smoke-filled doorway, raising a suppressed carbine.

Elena scrambled downward into the dark, her hands burning against the freezing metal rungs as a volley of silenced bullets pinged off the concrete walls inches from her head. She dropped rapidly through the damp air, the sounds of the laboratory fading away as the heavy steel seal slammed shut above them with a resounding, final crash.
The darkness closed in completely, broken only by the dim pulse of the red descent lights far below. Elena clung to the ladder, her breath coming in ragged gasps in the confined space. But as her eyes adjusted to the dim red glow, she froze, realizing something horrifying hanging from the structural support beam just three rungs below her boots.
