Chapter 11: The Emergency Protocol

The emergency klaxons wailed with a harsh, rhythmic screech that vibrated through the concrete floor, bathing the underground medical bay in a flashing, hypnotic crimson glow. In the absolute darkness between the strobe flashes, the only light came from the sparking wiring of the overhead panels and the blinking green telemetry screen of Clara’s disabled pod.

Elena scrambled backward across the slick tile floor, clutching the metallic sample case tightly against her chest with one arm while keeping her grip on the wooden clipboard with the other. Across the room, Julian staggered against the medical counter, coughing as the smoke from the ceiling discharge settled heavily in the confined space.

“System override initiated,” a cold, synthetic voice boomed from the overhead intercom speakers, drowning out the alarms. “Facility bio-purge sequence engaged. All lower-level bulkheads will seal in three minutes.”

Thomas Vance dragged himself against the wall, his hand pressed over his bleeding side as he stared up at the digital countdown clock flashing in crimson digits above the exit door: 02:59… 02:58…

“We’re locked in,” Thomas gasped, his voice cracking with panic. “Julian’s erratic shot must have severed the main coolant line to the reactor core. The purge protocol can’t be manually cancelled once it’s triggered.”

Julian wiped a streak of blood from his forehead, his immaculate gray suit now completely ruined, stained with soot and medical fluid. Despite the imminent catastrophe, a twisted, desperate smile curled across his lips. He ignored Thomas entirely, fixing his dark, burning gaze squarely on Elena.

“Hand over the sample case, Elena,” Julian demanded, his voice cutting through the wailing sirens with chilling authority as he raised his sidearm once more, though his hand trembled slightly from the blast impact. “If we’re going to be buried alive in this tomb, I’m taking the complete viral matrix with me.”

“You’re insane, Julian,” Elena yelled back over the deafening alarms, pushing herself up to her feet. Her dark blue coat was torn at the shoulder, her dark brown hair matted with sweat and dust, but her eyes burned with fierce defiance. “If that sample container breaches in a closed-loop purge, it won’t just destroy the facility—it will aerosolize the pathogen and vent it directly into the surface water table.”

“I don’t care about the water table!” Julian roared, taking a stumbling step forward, his finger tightening on the trigger. “The board promised me extraction. If I don’t deliver this package, my life is forfeit anyway!”

01:45… 01:44…

The digital clock ticked down relentlessly, casting an eerie red wash over their faces.

Thomas suddenly shoved himself off the wall, lunging forward with a desperate, self-sacrificing cry to tackle Julian around the waist just as the weapon discharged. The bullet sparked harmlessly off the metal doorframe, and both men crashed hard onto the floor in a tangled heap of limbs.

“Run, Elena!” Thomas screamed, struggling to pin Julian’s arm against the tile. “Take the case and head for the maintenance shaft! Don’t look back!”

Elena hesitated for a fraction of a second, her heart tearing in two as she looked down at her lifelong mentor locked in a brutal struggle for survival. Then, clutching the wooden clipboard and the metallic sample case to her chest, she turned and sprinted out the shattered doorway into the smoke-filled corridor just as the heavy security bulkhead began its rapid, automated descent.
