Chapter 10: The Barrel of Convenience

The cold steel barrel of Julian’s sidearm gleamed menacingly under the harsh fluorescent lights of the sterile medical chamber. The silence in the room became absolute, broken only by the rhythmic, mechanical hum of Clara’s containment pod and the ragged, shallow breathing of Thomas Vance as he clutched his side.

“Put the weapon down, Julian,” Elena said, her voice remarkably steady despite the adrenaline hammering against her ribs. She gripped the edge of the wooden clipboard so tightly her fingers ached. “Killing us won’t change the encryption keys. Without my biometric signature, that sample case in your hand is nothing more than a sealed paperweight.”

Julian’s eyes flicked from Thomas to Elena, a calculating micro-expression crossing his face as he weighed her words. He knew she was right; the central database required a dual-key authorization sequence that only Elena and the deceased board directors possessed.

“You always were remarkably arrogant, Elena, right up until the bitter end,” Julian replied, his finger resting lightly against the trigger. “I don’t need your live signature to bypass the database anymore. I downloaded your complete neurological mapping profile when you hacked the biometric scanner upstairs.”

Elena’s breath hitched. The memory of pressing her palm against the glass scanner flashed through her mind—it wasn’t just a simple access check; it had been a biological scan designed to extract her neural credentials.

“You tricked me,” she whispered, the betrayal burning hotter than before.

“Survival requires deception, my dear,” Julian said coldly, taking a slow step backward toward the exit while keeping the weapon trained squarely on Thomas’s chest. “And now, your usefulness has officially expired.”

Before Julian could tighten his finger on the trigger, Clara suddenly slammed her palms against the interior glass of her containment pod with a deafening crack. The reinforced glass shattered outward in a spiderweb pattern, showering the floor with glittering shards as Clara lunged forward, her bare hands grabbing Julian’s wrist with superhuman strength.

The sidearm discharged wildly, the bullet tearing harmlessly through the acoustic ceiling tiles in a shower of plaster dust and sparks. Julian cursed sharply, dropping the metallic sample case as he struggled violently against Clara’s terrifying, mechanical grip.

“Get the case!” Thomas yelled, stumbling forward and kicking the sliding metallic container across the smooth tile floor toward Elena.

Elena didn’t hesitate. She dropped to her knees, scooping up the metallic case just as Julian managed to wrench his arm free from Clara’s grasp, slamming the heavy butt of his sidearm against the side of Clara’s head. Clara crumpled silently to the floor, motionless.

Julian whirled around, his eyes wild and furious as he pointed the smoking barrel directly at Elena’s face. But before he could pull the trigger, the entire subterranean complex shuddered violently, plunging into pitch-black darkness as the emergency alarms began to wail a deafening, crimson-lit warning.
