Chapter 12: The Morning Audit

The morning sun cut through the tall windows of the grand foyer, casting bright, dusty shafts of light across the polished marble floor. At precisely nine o'clock, the heavy brass knocker on the front door fell three times. Julian, standing near the staircase in his striped shirt and dark blue sweater, took a slow, deep breath. Beside him, Maya stood with her hands clasped lightly in front of her, wearing her checkered crop top and black shorts with an air of unflinching calm.

The housekeeper hurried down the hall to open the heavy double doors, admitting a middle-aged man in a sharp gray suit carrying a metal briefcase.

"Mr. Vance," the auditor said, extending a hand as he stepped inside. "I'm Thomas Gable from the municipal property commission. I'm here to conduct the annual residency compliance review for the Vance estate trust."

"Welcome, Mr. Gable," Julian said, shaking the man's hand with steady composure. "Allow me to introduce my partner, Maya."

Gable nodded politely, glancing between them with the practiced eye of a bureaucrat who had seen every possible iteration of wealthy family dysfunction. "Splendid. If we could review the primary documentation in the study, followed by a brief walk-through of the main residence, we can wrap this up efficiently."

For the next forty-five minutes, the audit moved with mechanical precision. Gable reviewed tax certificates, insurance filings, and residency declarations while Helen sat quietly in the corner wingback chair, watching the proceedings like a hawk guarding its nest. Julian answered every question with crisp, professional clarity, while Maya provided corroborating details with a cool, detached efficiency that left no room for suspicion.

When Gable finally snapped his metal briefcase shut, a small smile touched his lips. "Everything appears to be in order, Mr. Vance. The domestic partnership verification matches state registry records from your previous address, and physical residency requirements have been fully met for the current term. The trust remains secure."

"Thank you, Mr. Gable," Julian said, walking the auditor to the front doors while Helen remained seated in the study, her hands resting tightly in her lap.

As the heavy oak door closed behind the county official, the silence in the grand foyer returned, heavier and more absolute than before. Julian turned slowly and walked back toward the study, where Helen was staring blankly at the empty desk.
