Chapter 1

The heavy wooden floorboards of the upper hallway groaned softly under the weight of Helen Vance’s heels as she glided away toward the master staircase. Her emerald satin dress rustled, a dry, whispering sound that seemed to linger in the stagnant air of the sprawling estate. Julian stood frozen by the white double doors, his hands resting limply at his sides. The collar of his striped shirt pressed tightly against his throat beneath the dark blue wool of his sweater, suddenly feeling restrictive. His beige trousers brushed against the painted doorframe as he turned his head slowly to watch his mother disappear around the polished banister.
Beside him, Maya shifted her weight. The red and white checkered crop top she wore caught the amber glow of the wall sconce, highlighting the slight tension in her shoulders. She crossed her arms tightly over her chest, the fabric pulling against the knot at her waist.
"You're sleeping on the floor," Maya said, her voice dropping to a low, flat register that carried no warmth.
Julian exhaled slowly, watching his own breath condense slightly in the drafty corridor. He kept his gaze level, refusing to let his frustration crack the facade of polite detachment he had maintained since they drove through the iron gates hours ago. "I don't sleep on floors. I have standards."
Maya let out a sharp, incredulous breath through her nose. "Standards? Julian, your mother just arranged this entire charade because she still thinks we're playing house in that cramped apartment downtown. We broke up three weeks ago. You packed my boxes yourself."
"I know what I did," Julian replied, his voice measured, almost clinical. He reached out and touched the cool, painted wood of the guest room door. "And I know my mother. If we didn't play along downstairs, she would have spent the entire dinner dissecting our bank statements, our schedules, and every minor flaw in our relationship until she found a way to tear us apart permanently. This was damage control. For one night."
"Well, your damage control has a king-sized bed and a terrifying collection of porcelain dolls on the dresser," Maya muttered, pushing past him to open the door wider. The room smelled faintly of old lavender and dust. "And for the record, I am not sharing that mattress with a man who thinks emotional suppression is a personality trait."

Julian stepped inside behind her, his eyes scanning the cavernous room. The reality of the situation was settling in with heavy, suffocating certainty. They were trapped in a house built on decades of carefully orchestrated lies, and the foundation was already beginning to fracture under the weight of their unresolved history.
