Chapter 10

The heavy steel door of the wall safe swung open with a dry, metallic sigh. Julian exhaled a breath he didn't realize he was holding, shining his penlight into the dark interior. Inside sat a single, thick leather ledger bound in cracked calfskin, alongside several folded legal documents tied with faded red ribbon.

Julian reached in and pulled out the ledger, setting it down on the mahogany desk while Maya held the light steady. He flipped open the front cover. The pages were filled with his grandfather's meticulous, spidery handwriting, detailing financial transactions, land sales, and secret debts stretching back over four decades.

"Look at this," Maya murmured, pointing to a page dated fifteen years ago. "The trust clause... Julian, read the annotation at the bottom."

Julian leaned closer, squinting at the faded ink. "'Should the primary heir choose to dissolve the domestic partnership clause, the penalty is not foreclosure of the estate, but rather the transfer of administrative control to the municipal historical board, provided the heir has alternative housing secured outside the district.'" He stared at the words, his mind racing. "Helen lied. The house doesn't go to public receivership for immediate liquidation. It becomes a protected historical landmark. We wouldn't lose the property; we'd just lose her iron grip on it."

"She kept you terrified of losing everything so you'd never leave," Maya said, her voice laced with cold fury. "She traded your freedom for her vanity."

"She built a prison out of a legacy and convinced me I was the warden," Julian said, his jaw tightening into a hard line. He picked up the ledger and slipped it inside the front of his dark sweater, pressing it flat against his chest. "We take this to the auditor in the morning."

Before Maya could reply, a soft, deliberate sound echoed from the dark hallway outside the library door. Tap. Tap. Tap. The sound of a heavy heel striking the parquet floor.

Julian froze. Maya instantly extinguished the penlight, plunging the room into total darkness save for the pale sliver of moonlight across the rug.

The heavy library door began to slowly, silently swing inward.
