Chapter 6: The Vigil of the Mill

For the next two weeks, the routine of the Miller family shrank to the quiet, disciplined rhythm of the ICU.

Every morning at six o'clock, Eleanor arrived at the hospital, bringing a thermos of fresh black coffee and clean linen for Thomas’s room.

She sat in the armchair by the window, knitting a heavy wool blanket from native Pennsylvania fleece while reading aloud from Thomas’s favorite historical biographies and timber forestry journals.

Down at *Vance-Miller Woodworks* in the valley, the local apprentices and journeyman carpenters refused to let the shop go dark.

Under Julian’s organizational guidance and the leadership of master sawyer Joe Thorne, the crew worked twelve-hour shifts to complete the restoration of the historic municipal bridge in town—a project Thomas had been directing before his collapse.

Local businesses stepped in without being asked.

The bakery on Main Street delivered fresh bread and hot casseroles to the hospital waiting room every evening. The hardware store waived the material accounts for the bridge timber, and the retired mechanics from the county garage took shifts maintaining the sawmill’s diesel generators.

On the twelfth day, as the afternoon sun cast long golden shadows across Room 12, Eleanor was reading a passage from John Muir’s writings on the ancient redwoods.

She felt a sudden, faint twitch in the fingers resting in her lap.

Eleanor stopped reading, her breath catching in her throat.

Thomas’s eyelids fluttered, his brow furrowing slightly against the white pillow.

""Thomas...?"" Eleanor whispered, leaning over the bed rail.

Thomas slowly opened his eyes—clear, pale blue eyes, blinking against the soft light of the room.

His gaze drifted across the ceiling, down the IV lines, and finally settled on Eleanor’s face.

His dry, cracked lips moved faintly beneath the oxygen mask.

""Eleanor..."" Thomas rasped, his voice barely a breath. ""Did she... did she wear the pearls?""
