Chapter 5: The ICU at Dusk

By five o'clock in the afternoon, the ICU waiting room was filled with twenty members of the wedding party.

Clara, still in her white bridal gown with the train pinned up, sat on the edge of the vinyl chair beside Room 12.

Dr. Harrison, the chief of cardiothoracic surgery, stepped through the double doors, pulling his surgical cap from his grey hair. His face was etched with deep exhaustion, but his eyes were warm.

""He survived the bypass repair, Clara,"" Dr. Harrison announced, speaking to the family. ""The graft held. His heart is beating on its own rhythm, though he remains in a medically induced coma to allow the vascular tissue to heal.""

Clara let out a choked sob of relief, burying her face in Julian’s shoulder.

""Can we see him, Doctor?"" Eleanor asked softly.

""Two at a time,"" the surgeon replied. ""Talk to him. The auditory pathways remain active even in deep sedation. Let him know you are here.""

Clara and Eleanor walked into Room 12 together.

The room was bathed in the soft amber glow of the setting sun filtering through the blinds.

Thomas lay propped up on the mechanical bed, surrounded by IV infusion pumps, arterial line monitors, and a gentle oxygen cannula. His face was pale, his strong, timber-worker hands resting motionless on the cotton sheet.

Clara knelt beside the bed, taking her father’s right hand in hers.

She leaned down, pressing her cheek against his rough knuckles, feeling the faint, steady pulse beneath his skin.

""Dad,"" Clara whispered, tears falling onto the white sheet. ""I’m here. Julian and I are married. I’m wearing the pearls, Dad. They’re so beautiful.""

Beside her, Eleanor reached out, taking Thomas’s left hand.

""You built a good bridge, Thomas,"" Eleanor whispered softly, her voice rich with ten years of forgiven sorrow. ""Now you rest. We are holding the cables.""
