Chapter 6: The Proffer Session

The following Thursday, David walked into the federal courthouse in Lower Manhattan accompanied not by his mother’s high-priced corporate defense attorneys, but by an independent public defense litigator named Thomas Morales.
They were escorted into a secure deposition room on the eleventh floor. Sitting across the long conference table were three federal prosecutors and the lead forensic auditor from the IRS.
David took a seat, folded his hands on the table, and looked directly at the chief prosecutor.
""I am not here to negotiate a plea for my mother,"" David stated clearly, his voice steady and calm. ""And I am not here to protect my personal inheritance.""
The prosecutor raised an eyebrow. ""Then why are you here, Mr. Sterling?""
David pulled a heavy leather-bound journal from his briefcase and placed it on the steel table. Inside were his personal daily business logs from the past ten years, documenting every transaction, wire transfer, and executive board meeting he had overseen.
""I am here to take full legal responsibility for my criminal negligence as managing partner of the Sterling family trust,"" David said. ""I allowed funds intended for community healthcare to be diverted. I have brought the complete bank authorization codes, server keys, and corporate signatures necessary to unlock every offshore account.""
The auditor flipped through the first few pages, his eyes widening as he realized the depth of transparency being offered.
""You understand this means the forfeiture of your personal properties, Mr. Sterling?"" the prosecutor asked. ""The Greenwich estate, the private portfolio, everything.""

""Take it all,"" David replied without a single second of hesitation. ""Use it to repay the hospital foundation and settle my sister's debts. I want nothing left of that money.""
