Chapter 2: The Mother's Throne

The double oak doors to the grand terrace clicked open, admitting a gust of morning breeze carrying the scent of salt spray and freshly cut hydrangeas.

Margaret Sterling walked in, wearing an ice-blue silk dressing gown, her silver hair perfectly coiffed, her posture rigid with seventy years of unassailable entitlement. Behind her came the soft, nervous footsteps of David’s younger sister, Claire, whose pale, anxious face had become a permanent fixture in the house since her divorce last autumn.

""What is this intolerable commotion?"" Margaret demanded, her voice sharp as broken crystal. ""David, why is the gardener still running the mowers while we are taking breakfast?""

David did not turn around. He remained rooted to the marble floor, staring at the folder in his wife's hands.

""Mother,"" David whispered, his voice cracking. ""Be quiet.""

Margaret’s eyes narrowed in aristocratic fury. ""How dare you speak to me like that! And you, Emma—I told you last night that your little architectural foundation will not receive a single cent of renewal funding from the trust this quarter. You are an employee of this family by marriage, nothing more.""

Emma did not raise her voice. She walked over to the console table beneath the gilded antique mirror, set the manila folder down, and slid the top three pages toward Margaret.

""Read page four, Margaret,"" Emma said softly.

Margaret scoffed, pulling a pair of tortoiseshell reading glasses from her pocket with deliberate disdain. ""I don't read drafts from—""

Her voice cut off.

The paper was an emergency freezing order issued by the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. It named Margaret Sterling as the primary target in an international money-laundering and non-profit diversion investigation.

""This is an outrage,"" Margaret choked out, her hand beginning to shake violently against the paper. ""This is fabricated! Arthur’s friends on the federal bench will have this dismissed by noon!""

""Judge Harrison recused himself two hours ago, Margaret,"" Emma said, picking up her beige leather handbag. ""Because his signature was forged on the 2022 offshore authorization deeds.""
