Chapter 6: The Emergency Ward Realities

The harsh glare of the hospital corridor offered no comfort as Arthur stepped back out from the consultation room, his boots feeling heavy against the floor. Dr. Vance walked beside him, carrying the recovered recording device securely in a clear plastic evidence bag. The quiet hum of the emergency wing seemed miles away as Arthur’s thoughts raced through the implications of what he had just heard. Henderson. The corporation. The engineered life. It all felt like a complex spiderweb, and he and his family were simply trapped in the center, waiting for the silk to tighten.

"We need to see them," Arthur said, his voice hard, lacking the frantic edge it had carried earlier. Pain and shock had hardened into a cold, calculated resolve.

"They're in intensive monitoring," Dr. Vance replied, turning toward the restricted wing. "The sedative used was a synthetic paralytic combined with a neurotoxin designed to suppress short-term memory formation. It's sophisticated. If I hadn't recognized the chemical signature from my previous research at the institute, the emergency panel would have just logged it as food poisoning and discharged them back into that house within forty-eight hours."

Arthur stopped walking, turning sharply to face the doctor. "Back into the house? Where Evelyn is?"

"Evelyn is gone," a new voice interrupted smoothly.

They turned to see Nurse Sarah walking briskly down the corridor clutching a clipboard. Her expression was grim. "Hospital security just reported that the cleaning staff stationed in the west wing observed an elderly woman matching Evelyn's description walk out through the ambulance bay exit three minutes ago. She didn't sign out. She left the mop bucket right by the sliding doors."

Arthur clenched his fists, his fingernails digging into his palms. "She knew we listened to the recording. They're cleaning house."

"Not yet," Dr. Vance said, holding up the plastic bag containing the device. "As long as we have this, they don't hold all the cards. This device isn't just a record of their conspiracy; it's a transmitter. It broadcasts on a closed local frequency. Henderson thinks he’s secure because he controls the neighborhood relay towers, but we can use that frequency to track their local node."

Arthur stared at the doctor, a grim spark of hope igniting in his chest. "You know where the local relay is?"

"The old water treatment facility at the edge of the industrial park," Vance said quietly. "It's abandoned on paper. But someone has been drawing heavy industrial power from the municipal grid for months."
