Chapter 10: The Maintenance Vent

The cold air in the server room dropped another ten degrees as the ventilation system hissed to a halt. The scraping sound above grew louder, rhythmic and deliberate, like a heavy object dragging across galvanized steel.
Arthur grabbed a heavy metal chair from beside the console, lifting it high above his head and stepping directly beneath the large square ceiling vent grille. The screws holding the metal grate in place were vibrating violently as something heavy shifted just behind the louvers.
"Arthur, the download is at ninety-two percent," Vance called out from the glow of the terminal screen, his voice tight with tension. "Don't break the vent unless you have to—the terminal is wired to auto-purge if the physical housing is compromised!"
Arthur froze, the metal chair trembling slightly in his grip. He lowered it slowly, keeping his eyes fixed on the ceiling grate. A shadow fell across the floor as a hand—gloved in black leather—pushed firmly against the interior louvers. One of the metal slats bent outward with a sharp snap.
"Eighty-nine seconds remaining," Vance muttered, his fingers flying across the keyboard to force the encryption blocks open.
With a sudden crash, the entire ceiling vent grille gave way, clattering hard against the server racks before hitting the concrete floor. A figure dropped silently from the opening, landing in a deep tactical crouch just six feet away from Arthur.
It wasn't Evelyn. It was a younger man in a dark tactical jumpsuit, his face partially obscured by a communication headset and a black balaclava. In his right hand, he held a specialized tactical breaching tool with a heavy carbon-steel head.
The operative didn't speak. He lunged forward with explosive speed, driving the blunt end of the tool directly toward Arthur’s chest.
Arthur reacted on pure instinct, twisting his body to the side just enough to let the heavy tool graze his ribs, the impact still knocking the wind from his lungs with a sharp grunt. He grabbed the operative’s forearm, using his momentum to pivot and slam the intruder hard against the nearest server rack. The metal cabinet rattled violently, flashing a cascade of red error lights as several internal hard drives disconnected.

The operative recovered instantly, spinning around and driving an elbow backward into Arthur’s stomach, sending him stumbling back against the master console.
"Download complete!" Vance shouted triumphantly, ripping a heavy-duty encrypted flash drive out of the terminal port. "We've got everything!"
