Chapter 2: The Hospital Corridor

The fluorescent lights of the county hospital overhead flickered with a low, agonizing hum that mirrored the frantic rhythm inside Arthur’s head. He sat on the edge of a stiff vinyl chair in the brightly lit corridor, his hands clasped tightly between his knees, staring fixedly at the scuffed white linoleum floor. The frantic chaos of the kitchen had dissolved into the sterile, antiseptic quiet of the emergency wing. Clara and Lily had been rushed behind heavy double doors twenty minutes ago, wheeled away by teams of silent nurses and hurried physicians who offered no explanations and spared no glances for a grieving husband and father.

Evelyn had stayed behind in the waiting room, sitting upright in the corner seat, her hands folded neatly over the dark wool of her sweater. She had not spoken a single word since the ambulance doors slammed shut. Arthur could feel her presence like a physical weight pressing against his spine, cold and calculating.

A pair of double doors swung open down the hall, and Dr. Vance stepped out. The middle-aged physician removed his surgical mask, letting it dangle from one ear as he walked with measured, weary steps toward Arthur. Vance’s white coat was unbuttoned, revealing blue scrubs underneath, and in his gloved hands, he carried something that instantly drained the remaining color from Arthur’s face.

It was Lily’s teddy bear.

The plush toy looked out of place against the sterile medical environment. Its worn brown fur was slightly damp, and one of its glass eyes caught the harsh hallway light. But it was not the bear itself that made Arthur stand up so fast his chair screeched loudly against the floor; it was the way Dr. Vance handled it, using two fingers like it was a biohazard, and the small, dark seam ripped open along its back.

Arthur took a step forward, his blue button-up shirt gaping slightly at the collar where he had torn the top button off in his panic. His breath caught in his throat.

"Are they..." Arthur started, his voice hollow, unable to finish the simple question.

"They are stable for the moment, Arthur," Dr. Vance said quietly, his voice carrying a grave weight that instantly put Arthur on high alert. "Physically, their vitals are stabilizing. But what we found inside this house... or rather, inside this toy... demands immediate answers."

Dr. Vance tilted the bear slightly, revealing the edge of a sleek black electronic device wedged deep within the synthetic stuffing. Arthur stared at it, a cold dread washing over him.
