Chapter 6 - Footprints in the Pine Needles

The damp pine needles muffled the frantic sound of Richard's heavy loafers as he crashed through the dense undergrowth, branches whipping across his face and tearing at the fabric of his light blue button-down shirt.

"Leo! Leo, stop running, you're going to get lost in the state park, it's miles of wilderness out here!" Richard yelled, his voice cracking with exhaustion as his chest heaved for oxygen in the damp, fern-choked air of the timberland.

Ahead of him, the flash of a gray t-shirt darted between two massive old-growth Douglas firs, moving with surprising speed for an eight-year-old boy driven by pure adrenaline and terror.

"You can't catch me, Dad, I know where Uncle Marcus hid the spare key to the ranger cabin," Leo's voice echoed back through the canopy, sounding small and distant against the roar of the wind rustling the high pine branches.

Richard pushed harder, his foot catching on a rotting root hidden beneath the moss, sending him sprawling hard onto the forest floor, scraping his palms and bruising his knees against the rocky soil.

"Damn it!" he cursed aloud, slamming his fist into the damp earth before pushing himself back up to his feet, ignoring the sharp pain radiating through his right wrist.

Back at the estate perimeter, Agent Miller watched the thermal imaging tablet in his hand, tracking the two distinct heat signatures moving deeper into the protected forest reserve.

"Sir, they're heading straight toward the old logging road that leads to the abandoned quarry," one of the tactical officers reported, checking the magazine of his sidearm. "If they reach the cliff edge before our units intercept them from the north ridge, we're going to lose them in the cave systems."

"Not if we cut them off through the maintenance fire trail," Miller replied coldly, gesturing to the two federal vehicles idling at the edge of the lawn. "Move out. And notify the state police to seal every exit within a five-mile radius."

Eleanor stood frozen on the scorched grass of the front lawn, the heat from the burning server room baking the back of her cream silk blouse, her mind racing as she realized that if Richard brought Leo back alive with that song, her name would be at the top of every indictment sheet in the district.

She turned slowly toward the side garage where the vintage station wagon sat with its engine idling, the keys dangling from the ignition just as they had been twenty minutes ago when the nightmare began.

Deep in the woods, Leo stopped beside a rusted metal culvert pipe half-buried in a muddy bank, panting heavily as he pressed his hand against his side to stop a sharp stitch in his ribs.

"Leo!" Richard's voice boomed through the trees, much closer this time, accompanied by the crashing sound of heavy footsteps breaking through the brush.

Leo dropped to his knees, hauled the heavy corrugated metal lid off the drainage pipe, and slipped his small body inside the dark, echoing concrete tube just as Richard burst out into the clearing.

"Leo, I see you, don't you dare crawl into that pipe, it's unstable!" Richard shouted, diving forward and grabbing the back of the boy's gray t-shirt right as Leo wriggled deep into the narrow conduit.

The fabric tore with a loud ripping sound, leaving half the shirt in Richard's fist as Leo vanished into the pitch-black darkness of the underground pipe, his laughter echoing eerily off the curved concrete walls.

Richard cursed violently, shining his cell phone flashlight into the dark opening, only to see the tunnel fork off in three different directions fifty feet ahead, leaving no way of knowing which path the boy had taken.
