Chapter 10 - Dawn Over the Iron Gate

The morning sun finally broke through the heavy gray clouds hanging over the estate, casting a warm golden light across the scorched grass and the twisted metal of the front gate where the story had begun twelve hours earlier.

Two unmarked federal sedans and a single police cruiser sat idling quietly in the drive, their red and blue lights turned off as Agent Miller walked down the front steps of the grand house, holding a thick manila envelope containing the original paper confessions recovered from box four-zero-two.

Richard and Eleanor sat side by side on the cold concrete steps of the portico, their wrists cuffed together with steel restraints, their clothes ruined, their empire completely dismantled, staring blankly at the ground between their feet.

A social worker stood a few yards away, holding an insulated blanket around Leo's shoulders as the eight-year-old boy clutched a brand-new, unstitched teddy bear—one without any hidden cards inside—against his chest.

"Are we going to the lake house now?" Leo asked softly, looking up into the kind, tired face of the social worker.

"No, sweetheart," she replied gently, offering him a small, comforting smile as she guided him toward the waiting car with the warm morning sun finally warming his face. "We're going somewhere much safer, where nobody will ever lie to you again."

Leo paused for a single moment, turning his head to look back at the black iron gate where his father sat in handcuffs, watching him leave with hollow, tearless eyes.

The boy didn't wave back; he simply turned around, climbed into the back seat of the car, and closed the door softly behind him as the vehicle pulled away down the long suburban lane toward a brand-new horizon.
