Chapter 2: Bitter Aftertaste

The sweet, artificial scent of citrus filled the air as the young man lowered the orange bottle from his lips, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. He let out a loud, exaggerated sigh of satisfaction, clearly playing to the audience of his three friends who stood a few paces behind him. They snickered, nudging each other's ribs and pointing at Mei, treating the working-class establishment like their own personal playground. The ringleader in the blue button-down shirt tossed the half-empty bottle from one hand to the other, his baseball cap tilted back just enough to reveal a smug, unchallenged smirk.
Mei stood motionless by the refrigerated shelf, her hands resting flat against the metal wire racks. Her expression shifted from momentary surprise to a cold, serious annoyance that seemed to lower the ambient temperature in the aisle. She did not yell, nor did she threaten him with police intervention. Instead, her eyes narrowed with a piercing intensity, tracking every subtle micro-expression on his face. She watched the way he leaned his weight onto his back foot, completely unguarded, entirely confident in his physical advantage and the presence of his backup crew. He took another casual gulp, oblivious to the fact that the predator standing across from him was merely measuring the distance.

The three observing young men stopped laughing as they caught Mei’s gaze. There was something profoundly unsettling about the absolute lack of panic in her posture. One of them shifted uncomfortably, his hands sliding into his jacket pockets as a cold knot formed in his stomach. He nudged his friend's shoulder, murmuring something low under his breath, but the warning came too late. The atmosphere inside the convenience store curdled, shifting from the lazy boredom of a midnight shift into something sharp, electric, and dangerous.
Mei’s mind raced through a catalog of muscle memory that predated her retail job by a decade. She remembered the dusty concrete training yards, the relentless drilling of forms, and the strict adherence to balance and timing. The young man in the cap laughed at some private joke, turning his side toward her as he tossed the bottle toward the counter. He thought he was walking away the victor of a harmless prank. He was entirely unaware that he had just crossed a line from which there was no polite retreat. The silence stretched thin, broken only by the steady hum of the store's refrigeration units and the heavy, rhythmic thud of his own impending defeat.
