Chapter 13: Dawn’s Early Light

The first pale rays of dawn began to bleed through the rain-streaked plate glass windows of the convenience store, diluting the harsh glare of the indoor fluorescent lights. The dark sedan parked outside had long since peeled away, its driver fleeing the scene the moment it became clear that his backup enforcers had been dismantled in under fifteen seconds. Inside, the two beaten men picked themselves up off the floor, stumbling backward toward the automatic doors with looks of sheer terror etched across their bruised faces. They didn't utter a single threat; they simply fled into the gray morning light, eager to put as much distance as possible between themselves and the terrifying clerk in the blue vest.

Mei stood by the counter, holding a broom and dustpan once again, sweeping up the scattered chip bags and straightening the displaced merchandise. Her muscles ached with a deep, lingering fatigue, but her mind was remarkably clear. The storm had passed, leaving behind a pristine, washed-out sky that promised a crisp new day. She knew that word would spread through the underworld fringes of the suburb. No one would bother this quiet little shop again. She had established her boundaries in a language everyone understood, securing her right to live in peace on her own terms.

The bell above the door chimed, a cheerful, familiar sound that signaled the arrival of the morning shift. Jin, the regular day clerk—a cheerful college student with a perpetually messy haircut—walked in carrying a steaming cup of coffee and wearing his yellow employee apron. He stopped dead in his tracks as he surveyed the spotless floors, the neatly organized shelves, and Mei standing patiently behind the counter, looking as composed as if nothing unusual had happened all night.

"Morning, Mei," Jin said, blinking in surprise as he looked around the unusually orderly shop. "Did we have a busy night? Everything looks cleaner than when I left yesterday evening."

"Just a few minor deliveries," Mei replied with a faint, almost imperceptible smile touching the corners of her lips. She unbuttoned her blue employee vest, folding it neatly and placing it on the shelf beneath the register. "The stock is counted, the floors are mopped, and the ledger is balanced. You shouldn't have any trouble today."

Jin smiled warmly, dropping his backpack behind the counter. "You're amazing, you know that? I don't know how you survive these grueling twelve-hour night shifts without losing your mind."

Mei simply nodded, grabbing her dark winter coat from the back room hook. She didn't elaborate on her past, nor did she mention the two enforcers she had sent packing into the rain. Some secrets were better left buried in the quiet hours of the night. She zipped up her jacket, pulled her hair free from the tight bun, and let her dark waves cascade down her shoulders, feeling the physical weight of the shift lift off her frame once and for all.
