Safe inside a quiet, dimly lit diner three blocks away, Sofia wrapped her beige coat around Leo’s shivering shoulders. She ordered a hot soup for him and sat down, staring at the golden brooch on the table next to his matching pin.

""Your mother... Clara... where is she?"" Sofia asked gently, her eyes brimming with unshed tears.

Leo swallowed hard, holding his spoon. ""She told me to go to the city center during the evening glow. She said if the men in black suits came, I had to find the lady with the golden leaf.""

Sofia closed her eyes as guilt washed over her. Ten years ago, Clara had taken the fall for a corporate secret to protect Sofia’s life. Sofia had built a successful, peaceful life, believing Clara was safe abroad. She never knew Clara had a son.
