Chapter 3 - The Unblinking Lens

The morning breeze rustled the maple trees overhead, but the tension between the two neighbors felt thick enough to cut with a knife. Mark refused to back down, recognizing that Evelyn was playing a deeply manipulative game to cover up her unhinged property destruction. He stood tall, his white t-shirt catching the bright sunlight as he pointed decisively toward the corner of his house, where a sleek, black security camera hummed quietly beneath the eaves.

“That camera recorded everything,” Mark said, his voice ringing with absolute certainty.

Evelyn’s smug facade cracked instantly. Her eyes darted upward to the small glass lens tracking her every movement from the roofline. All the color drained from her face, replacing her confident smirk with a mask of genuine terror. The pink polo shirt suddenly seemed too tight, her breathing turning shallow and rapid as she realized her meticulously planned alibi had just been completely dismantled by modern technology.

“You... you installed that without telling me,” Evelyn stammered, her voice losing its composed edge.

“I installed it legally on my own property to protect my family,” Mark replied, stepping closer. “And it captures a wide-angle, high-definition view of every single inch of this front yard, including the exact moment you lost your mind and destroyed my flagpole.”

Evelyn’s hands began to tremble. She looked frantically down the street, as if searching for an escape route, but Maplewood Drive remained eerily quiet. No other neighbors were outside; it was as if the entire street had collectively held its breath to watch this confrontation unfold.

“Delete it,” Evelyn hissed, lunging forward with a desperate desperation in her eyes. “Mark, delete that footage right now. You don't understand the consequences if anyone sees what's on that drive.”

Mark easily sidestepped her clumsy lunge, keeping a safe distance between them. “Consequences? You’re the one who committed vandalism in broad daylight. I’m calling the police right now, and I’m handing them the flash drive on a silver platter.”

“Don’t you dare!” Evelyn screamed, losing her composure entirely as her shrill voice echoed down the pavement. “If the police look at your hard drive, they won't just see a broken flagpole. They’ll see what’s buried beneath it.”

Mark froze, his hand hovering over his smartphone. A cold dread settled into the pit of his stomach. What was buried beneath the flagpole? He had driven those metal anchors into the sod himself three years ago when he moved in. There was nothing down there except dirt, grass roots, and topsoil. Or at least, that’s what he had assumed until Evelyn’s terrifying slip of the tongue exposed a much darker, hidden reality.

Before Mark could process the chilling implication of her words, the low, steady rumble of a police cruiser engine broke the quiet morning air, signaling the arrival of local law enforcement.
