Chapter 2 - The Sudden Wardrobe Change

Mark stood over the crumpled remains of his flagpole, his breathing shallow as he tried to process the sheer audacity of Evelyn’s attack. The morning air felt suddenly heavy, weighed down by an unspoken menace that hung over the entire cul-de-sac. He knelt in the damp grass, running a calloused hand along the dented aluminum shaft. The mounting bolts had been sheared right out of the concrete footing, requiring heavy tools to repair. But the physical damage was nothing compared to the eerie psychological shift that had just occurred mere feet from his front porch.
Less than sixty seconds after retreating into her house, the front door clicked open again. Mark looked up, expecting Evelyn to emerge with an apology or perhaps a fresh wave of hostility. Instead, the woman stepping back onto the driveway was wearing a completely different outfit. Gone was the blue cardigan, white top, and black skirt. In their place, Evelyn now wore a bright pink polo shirt tucked neatly into matching slacks, her hair hurriedly restyled into a tight ponytail. It was a bizarre, calculated transformation designed to alter her appearance entirely in the span of a single minute.
“You damaged my flag pole!” Mark said, rising to his feet and stepping toward the property line, his voice echoing sharply down the quiet street.
Evelyn crossed her arms, adopting a posture of supreme, performative innocence. She blinked in exaggerated confusion, tilting her head with an unsettlingly calm smile.
“I haven’t the slightest idea what you’re talking about, Mark,” Evelyn replied, her tone dripping with rehearsed sweetness. “I’ve been inside watering my kitchen plants all morning. Ask anyone.”
Mark pointed an accusing finger at the twisted metal lying ruined across his turf. “You were standing right here less than a minute ago wearing a blue cardigan! You ripped it down with your own hands!”
Evelyn chuckled softly, a sound devoid of any real warmth. “You must have sleep-walked into some sort of episode, Mark. Perhaps you should go back inside and lie down. It’s not good for a man your age to hallucinate in public view.”
The gaslighting was so brazen, so effortlessly executed, that Mark momentarily doubted his own sanity. Had he imagined the blue cardigan? Had the violent struggle just been a stress-induced daydream? He opened his mouth to retort, but stopped cold when he noticed a subtle detail. Sticking out of the pocket of her new pink polo shirt was a crumpled piece of blue fabric. She had tried to hide the cardigan, but she hadn’t hidden it well enough.
Mark took a slow step forward, his eyes locking onto the protruding blue cloth. Evelyn noticed his gaze, and her forced smile faltered for a fraction of a second, her micro-expression betraying a sudden flash of panic before she quickly tucked the fabric deeper into her pocket.
“You think you’re clever, don’t you?” Mark whispered, his voice steady and cold.

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed into dangerous slits. “You have no idea what you’re messing with, Mark. Drop it.”
