Chapter 13 - The Letter Left Behind

The white piece of paper fluttered down and landed softly on the linoleum floor near Elena’s silver-buckled shoes. Thomas stepped forward, bending down to retrieve the letter before the draft from the hallway could blow it away. He held it up under the harsh fluorescent lights of Room 402, his eyes scanning the shaky, familiar handwriting of the man who had just passed away.

“What does it say?” Elena whispered, her voice barely audible as she stared numbly at the spot where her father’s bed had been.

Thomas cleared his throat, his eyes widening as he read the words aloud into the quiet room.

“To my dearest Elena, and my brave little Lily. If you are reading this, it means I didn’t make it to the cake. Do not weep for me; I lived long enough to see the truth brought to light. But know this: the man who helped you find this room today—the baker—is not who you think he is. Look behind the frosting in the second tier.”

Thomas stopped reading, his gaze shooting instantly across the room to where the two-tier blue and white cake sat undisturbed on the bedside table. The baker stood silently near the door, his hands resting calmly in his pockets, offering no defense or explanation.

“What is that supposed to mean?” Elena demanded, spinning around to face the baker. She took a threatening step toward him, her grief instantly morphing into a protective, desperate fury. “What did you put in that cake?”

The baker didn’t flinch. He slowly walked over to the bedside table, picked up a plastic knife from the hospital tray, and handed it to Lily instead of Elena.

“You wanted to give your grandpa his birthday cake, didn’t you, sweetheart?” the baker asked gently, kneeling down to meet the five-year-old’s tear-filled eyes. “It’s time to cut the first slice.”

Lily looked up at her mother for permission. Elena hesitated, her chest heaving as she stared at the baker with deep suspicion, but eventually, she gave a slow, cautious nod.

Lily gripped the plastic knife with both hands, pressing the blade down into the top tier of the blue and white frosting. The knife sliced smoothly through the sponge cake until it hit something solid hidden deep inside the center of the pastry. With a soft crunch, the blade hit metal.

“Mommy, I hit something hard,” Lily announced, looking up with wide, curious eyes.

“Step back, Lily,” Thomas said, gently pulling the little girl away from the table. He reached out and used the plastic knife to carve away the surrounding sponge cake and blue frosting.

Buried deep inside the core of the birthday cake was a tightly sealed, waterproof titanium cylinder. Thomas pulled it out, wiping the sweet blue frosting from its metallic surface with his thumb. The cylinder was engraved with a set of coordinates and a single word: BEGINNING.

Elena stared at the titanium capsule, her breath catching in her throat. “My father didn’t just hide the trust deed. What is this?”

The baker smiled faintly, stepping toward the door and reaching for the handle. “That, Mrs. Sterling, is the key to every single offshore account Arthur used to frame your family twenty years ago. The game isn’t over. It’s only just starting.”

Before Thomas could demand an answer, the baker slipped out into the hallway and vanished around the corner.

Elena rushed to the doorway, looking down the long, empty hospital corridor. There was no sign of him. But as she turned back toward the room, she noticed something impossible sitting on the floor right outside the threshold.

It was a second titanium cylinder, identical to the first, but this one had a name carved into its side: THOMAS.
