Chapter 1 - The Weight of Two Hundred Dollars

The afternoon sunlight poured through the pristine glass windows of The Golden Crust Bakery, illuminating the dust motes dancing around the two-tier masterpiece resting on the marble display counter. The cake was a vision of culinary art, draped in smooth blue and white frosting, adorned with a crown of fresh summer berries, and topped with a shimmering plastic sign that read "Happy Birthday." Five-year-old Lily stood on her tiptoes, her light brown hair neatly braided, the tulle skirt of her cream-colored party dress rustling softly against her silver shoes. Beside her stood her grandfather, an elderly man with snow-white hair, leaning heavily on a scarred wooden walking cane.
Lily pointed a small, trembling finger toward the pastry case, her voice ringing out with innocent pride.
“That cake for my grandpa!” she announced, her chest heaving with excitement.
Behind the counter, a thirty-year-old baker in a crisp chef uniform and a stained black apron looked down from the towering display. He crossed his arms, his expression hardening slightly as he gestured toward the top tier.
“Okay, but it costs two hundred dollars,” the baker said flatly, his tone lacking any warmth.
Lily’s radiant smile vanished instantly. Her lower lip began to tremble, and a fresh wave of tears welled up in her big, expressive eyes. She gripped the edge of the glass counter, her small knuckles turning white.
“I don’t have money,” Lily pleaded, her voice cracking as a single tear traced a clean path down her dusty cheek. “Please give it to me, it's my grandpa's birthday today, I want to make him happy.”
The grandfather gently placed a wrinkled, trembling hand on the little girl's shoulder, coughing quietly into his sleeve. The baker sighed, running a hand through his short-cropped hair, looking somewhat uncomfortable before offering a strange, calculating smile.
“No worries,” the baker said, leaning forward over the glass. “If these people follow you, I will give this birthday cake for free.”
Lily blinked through her tears, spinning around to face the crowded sidewalk outside the bakery window. She locked eyes with a complete stranger who had stopped walking just outside the glass doors, holding up her hands in a desperate plea.
“Please follow me, it's my grandpa's birthday!” Lily shouted directly at the window.

The stranger froze, staring at the little girl with a look of absolute, soul-crushing terror.
