Chapter 8: Emergency Triage

The rear doors of the ambulance swung open with a loud metallic snap, flooding the cramped interior with the harsh, sterile light of the hospital emergency bay. Shouts echoed off the concrete walls as medical staff mobilized with practiced efficiency. Marcus and his partner pulled the gurney smoothly out of the vehicle, wheeling Marnie into the brightly lit corridors of the emergency department while Liam trailed closely behind, clutching his phone and hospital paperwork like a lifeline.
""Twenty-eight-year-old female, seven months pregnant, presenting with acute pica ingestion of unknown mineral powders, tachycardia, and reporting decreased fetal movement,"" Marcus barked concisely to the triage nurse as they burst through the double doors.
The transition from the ambulance to a trauma bay happened in a blur of motion. Nurses swarmed the gurney, transferring Marnie onto a wide hospital bed equipped with continuous fetal monitoring straps. Cold ultrasound gel was squirted onto her bare abdomen before she even had time to fully register the change of scenery. The room filled with a tense, collective silence as the obstetric resident pressed the handheld transducer into Marnie’s skin, searching the screen for the rhythmic heartbeat that would anchor them all in reality.
Liam stood frozen at the foot of the bed, his hands gripping the metal railing so tightly his knuckles turned chalk white. He stared at the monochrome monitor, unable to decipher the shifting gray shapes and static shadows pulsing across the screen. Every second dragged like an hour.
""There,"" the resident whispered, her voice cutting through the heavy tension in the room.
A sharp, rapid *whoosh-whoosh-whoosh* filled the small trauma bay, echoing through the speakers of the ultrasound machine. It was a fast, strong, galloping rhythm—the unmistakable sound of a healthy fetal heartbeat racing at one hundred and forty beats per minute.

Marnie let out a ragged, explosive gasp that sounded half like a laugh and half like a sob. The tears spilled over her eyelids, streaming hot and fast down her temples into her hair. The crushing weight on her chest instantly dissolved, replaced by an overwhelming, dizzying wave of relief so intense it made her lightheaded. She closed her eyes and whispered endless words of gratitude into the sterile air of the hospital room.
Liam buried his face in his hands, his shoulders shaking as the adrenaline finally left his body, leaving him utterly exhausted and profoundly grateful.
