Chapter 7: The Ambulance Ride

The interior of the ambulance was a sterile, claustrophobic world of stainless steel, flashing monitors, and the steady, rhythmic hum of medical equipment. Marnie lay secured on the gurney, the thin mattress rustling beneath her as Marcus strapped her securely in. The white powder on her face had been gently wiped away with a sterile saline cloth by the second paramedic, revealing pale, drawn skin and lips bitten raw from anxiety.
Liam sat rigidly on the narrow bench seat opposite the gurney, his knees knocking against the supply cabinets. His blue t-shirt and plaid pajama pants felt entirely out of place in the clinical environment, a lingering reminder of the domestic normalcy that had shattered less than an hour ago. He held Marnie’s hand with a white-knuckled grip, his thumb constantly stroking the back of her hand, searching for a pulse of reassurance.
""Blood pressure is ninety over sixty, heart rate is one hundred and ten,"" the second paramedic announced, her fingers flying across the keypad of a portable monitor. She glanced up with a calm, professional expression. ""We're running an IV line now to stabilize her electrolytes and flush whatever toxins might have entered her system from that pantry.""
Marnie winced as the small needle pierced the skin of her forearm, but she barely made a sound. Her mind was entirely consumed by a hollow, aching fear in her lower belly. She stared up at the ceiling of the moving vehicle, watching the shadows dance across the white panels as the ambulance swerved around a corner with a low, mournful groan of its siren.
""Liam,"" Marnie choked out, her voice trembling violently. ""The baby... what if I hurt our baby?""
May you like
""You didn't,"" Liam said, though his voice lacked conviction, betraying the terror he was desperately trying to mask. He leaned forward, pressing his forehead against her free hand. ""They're going to check everything at the hospital, honey. We're almost there.""
The ambulance hit a bump in the road, sending a jarring jolt through the cabin. Marnie gasped, clutching her stomach as a sharp, cramping sensation rippled through her uterus. It wasn't a normal contraction; it felt like a dull, heavy weight pressing downward. She closed her eyes, offering a silent, desperate prayer to whatever higher power might be listening, begging for forgiveness, begging for a second chance to protect the fragile life she had nearly compromised in a moment of inexplicable darkness.
