Chapter 4: The Tiled Abyss

The kitchen seemed to close in around them as the wailing siren outside grew deafeningly loud, vibrating through the floorboards and rattling the glass in the upper cabinets. Marnie remained slumped against the base of the lower cupboards, her body racked with intermittent shudders. The white powder on her face had mixed with sweat and tears, creating a ghostly mask that accentuated the dark circles under her eyes. She was twenty-eight years old, a woman who prided herself on control, healthy living, and meticulous organization, yet she had completely unraveled on the linoleum in a matter of minutes.
Liam stayed pressed against her side, one arm securely around her waist while his other hand held hers tightly. His skin was slick with cold sweat, and his blue t-shirt was stained with white dust transferred from Marnie’s shoulder. ""They're almost here, baby,"" Liam whispered, his voice dropping into a low, soothing register that belied the terror in his eyes. ""Just hold on. Just stay with me, Marnie. Look at me, not the floor.""
Marnie forced her heavy eyelids to lift. She focused on the familiar grain of wood in the kitchen table just a few feet away, anchoring herself to anything that wasn't the memory of the spoon and the powdery residue on her tongue. The guilt was suffocating. Every instinct told her that she had failed as a mother before her child had even drawn its first breath. What kind of mother eats dirt? What kind of mind destroys its own safety?

Grandma Eleanor stood near the doorway, still holding the phone to her ear, relaying the paramedic's instructions back into the room. ""They're coming up the walkway now. Keep her calm, Liam. Don't let her drink anything just yet.""
The front door chimed open with a sharp, electronic beep, followed by heavy, purposeful footsteps echoing down the hallway. The sterile scent of antiseptic and outdoor air suddenly breached the claustrophobic confines of the kitchen. Marnie let out a ragged sob, her hands flying instinctively to her swollen belly to protect the fragile life growing inside her, praying silently that the damage she had inflicted upon herself had not reached the innocent soul resting beneath her heart.
