Chapter 12: The Harvest Wedding in the Hollow

They were married on a warm Saturday in late September, on the grassy meadow beside the historic watermill.

There were no velvet ropes. There were no thousand-dollar floral arrangements, no private security guards, and no social hierarchies designed to make people feel small.

The wedding altar was framed by two ancient white hemlock trees hung with hand-forged iron lanterns that Luke had made in his shop.

One hundred and fifty neighbors—forestry rangers, apprentices, local botanists, shopkeepers, and mountain families—sat on hand-hewn chestnut benches beneath the cloudless blue sky.

Emma wore a simple, flowing ivory linen dress she had sewn herself, adorned with a wreath of wild mountain asters and ferns.

Luke stood beside her in a clean dark wool vest and white linen shirt, his hand holding hers with a grip as strong and secure as the bedrock beneath the creek.

Silas stood beside them, holding an old family Bible, his eyes filled with tears of boundless, generational gratitude.

When the local mountain preacher pronounced the blessing, the crowd erupted into joyous cheers that echoed off the granite cliffs as acoustic fiddles, banjos, and dulcimers struck up a lively Appalachian reel.

Long timber tables were assembled on the grass, groaning beneath platters of smoked mountain trout, roasted autumn squash, fresh sourdough bread, and wild blackberry cobblers baked in the homestead’s outdoor stone ovens.

They danced on the grass under the stars until midnight, celebrating a love that had no price tag, no secrets, and nothing left to hide.
