Chapter 11: The Ring in the Forge

That evening, as the full moon rose over the mountain ridges, painting the forest canopy in silver and deep indigo, Luke invited Emma into his blacksmith shop down the valley.

The forge fire was glowing with a rich, radiant cherry-red heat. The smell of burning coal, warm beeswax, and hot iron filled the timber building.

Luke stood by the massive iron anvil, holding a pair of forging tongs.

""I made something for you, Emma,"" Luke said softly, his voice carrying the deep, steady cadence of the hills.

He pulled a small ring of metal from the coals and laid it on the anvil. With gentle, rhythmic taps of a small cross-peen hammer, Luke shaped the band, working the metal with the patient, effortless grace of a master.

When the ring cooled, he quenched it in a barrel of cold mountain spring water with a sharp, hissing burst of steam.

He dried the metal with a clean linen cloth and laid it in Emma’s hand.

It was a simple, elegant band hand-forged from Damascus steel, displaying delicate, flowing grain patterns that looked like the moving water of Betty’s Creek, inlaid with a hairline thread of native Georgia mountain gold.

""In the city, they give you diamonds to show how much they can spend on you, Emma,"" Luke said, his grey eyes filled with quiet, absolute devotion. ""In the mountains, we forge steel to show that we will stand beside you through every fire without bending.""

He looked into her dark eyes, his voice soft and unwavering.

""Will you walk the ridges with me, Emma?""

Emma looked down at the steel band, feeling its balanced, honest weight in her palm.

Her heart was completely, unshakeably full.

""Yes, Luke,"" Emma whispered, tears of radiant peace shining on her cheeks. ""Always yes.""
