Chapter 10: Dawn

The sky was bleeding into shades of bruised purple and pale pink as Arthur’s SUV pulled to a stop in front of Elena's apartment building. The city was quiet, oblivious to the violence that had transpired in its shadows.

Maya was wrapped in a thermal blanket in the backseat, sleeping out of sheer exhaustion. Arthur sat quietly in the front passenger seat. Leo, behind the wheel, looked at him.

""You did it,"" Leo said quietly. ""You actually did it.""

""We did it,"" Arthur corrected, turning to look at the young man. ""You don't owe me anything anymore, Leo. Your slate is clean. You're a good man.""

Leo nodded slowly. ""What about her? What are you going to do?""

Arthur looked up at the third-floor window. The light was on. He knew she was awake, probably waiting for the phone call confirming he was dead, her soul shattering into a million pieces. ""I'm going to do the hardest thing,"" Arthur said. ""I'm going to listen.""
