Chapter 1: The Escape

The heavy rain lashed against the windshield of the unassuming sedan, blurring the neon lights of the city skyline into streaks of crimson and gold. Arthur gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles white, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. Beside him, Leo, the young waiter who had just saved his life, kept his eyes glued to the rearview mirror. The silence in the car was suffocating, broken only by the rhythmic, frantic squeak of the wipers.
Arthur’s mind raced, replaying the last ten minutes. Elena. The woman he loved, the woman whose laughter had filled the empty halls of his estate, had calmly excused herself to freshen her makeup while armed men closed in on their table. The betrayal felt like a physical weight pressing on his chest, far colder than the damp night air.
""Take the next left,"" Leo instructed, his voice remarkably steady for a man who had just risked everything. ""We need to drop this car and move on foot. They will track the plates.""

Arthur turned the wheel, his tailored suit now damp and clinging awkwardly to his shoulders. ""Why?"" Arthur finally whispered, the word tearing from his throat. ""Why did you warn me? You don't even know me.""
Leo turned to look at him, his expression unreadable in the dim dashboard light. ""You don't remember me, Mr. Vance. But I remember you. Drive.""
