Chapter 10

Word of the incident inside the first-class cabin spread through the corporate headquarters of the Thorne Group with the speed of a digital wildfire. By late evening, the private dining rooms and executive suites were buzzing with quiet conversations about Beatrice Vance’s spectacular fall from grace. In high society, reputations were carefully curated illusions built on decades of networking, charitable donations, and carefully managed public appearances. Yet, all it took was one unmasked moment of prejudice on a flight at thirty thousand feet to tear that illusion apart completely. Elias Thorne sat behind his massive mahogany desk in his penthouse office overlooking the glittering city skyline. The city lights twinkled like distant stars, a vast network of human lives moving through the night. He had changed into a fresh white shirt, the coffee-stained suit hanging neatly in the corporate wardrobe downstairs. He gazed out the floor-to-ceiling windows, sipping a cup of black coffee without any milk or sugar, his mind reflecting on the broader implications of the day's events.

Incidents like the one with Beatrice were rarely isolated; they were symptoms of a deeper, systemic rot that allowed entitlement to masquerade as superiority. People like her operated with the comfortable assumption that the rules of basic human decency applied only to those of equal social standing, while service workers and marginalized individuals were expected to absorb their casual cruelty without complaint. Elias had spent his entire career using his influence not just to accumulate wealth, but to dismantle those invisible walls wherever he found them. He believed that true power was measured not by how many people you could command, but by how fiercely you protected the dignity of those who could not protect themselves.

His phone buzzed softly on the desk, displaying a secure text notification from Arthur Vance. Municipal transport board hearing concluded. Vance real estate portfolio assets frozen pending compliance review. Elias read the message without a flicker of satisfaction. There was no joy in watching someone self-destruct; there was only the quiet fulfillment of justice being served in its purest, most unavoidable form.

A soft chime signaled the arrival of an incoming visitor. The heavy oak doors of his office swung open quietly, and Chloe stepped inside, wearing her civilian travel attire. She looked slightly out of place in the sprawling, luxurious office, but her posture was steady and confident. She carried the folder Arthur had given her earlier that afternoon.

“Mr. Thorne,” Chloe said respectfully, stepping toward the desk. “Thank you for having me here.”

Elias stood up from his leather chair, walking around to meet her halfway. He extended his hand, a warm, genuine smile breaking across his features—a stark contrast to the absolute stillness he had maintained on the aircraft.

“Thank you, Chloe, for reminding everyone on that plane what real character looks like,” Elias said, shaking her hand firmly. “Tomorrow, the real work begins. Are you ready to change the culture of an industry?”

Chloe gripped his hand firmly, her eyes shining with quiet determination.

May you like

“I was born ready, Mr. Thorne.”
