Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Burgundy Suit

The air inside the ballroom turned instantly frigid as the tactical team moved with cold, mechanical precision. Heavy combat boots stomped against the polished mahogany, surrounding the cowering guests who had only moments ago cheered for Elora’s torment. Julian scrambled backward on his hands and knees, his expensive burgundy jacket dragging in the spilled red wine that pooled near Clara’s feet. Clara clutched the hem of her green one-shoulder gown, her dark hair falling wildly across her face as she looked up at the barrel of an assault rifle pointed inches from her forehead.

“Stay down! Hands behind your head! Do not move!” a tactical officer barked, his voice amplified by a helmet-mounted communications rig.

Elora stood completely still amid the swirling dust and chaos, her posture rigid, her pinkish hair catching the harsh glare of the helicopter searchlight still blazing through the broken windows. She did not look down at Julian, who was now weeping pathetically, his previous arrogance entirely evaporated. The scars on her back remained exposed, a silent testament to years of calculated cruelty that the city's elite had willingly ignored for the sake of social standing.

A tall, silver-haired man in a bespoke charcoal overcoat strode through the shattered double doors. Marcus Sterling, Elora’s father and the reclusive billionaire titan of global logistics, walked with the terrifying calm of a supreme predator. His eyes swept the room, ignoring the groveling socialites until they landed upon his daughter. The fury in his old eyes was ice-cold, far more lethal than any weapon drawn by his private security force.

Marcus walked past Julian without even glancing down, as if the man were nothing more than an inconvenient speck of dust on his shoe. He stopped three feet from Elora, gently removing his own heavy overcoat and draping it over her scarred shoulders, completely covering the physical evidence of her torment.

“It is finished, my girl,” Marcus murmured softly, his voice trembling slightly with suppressed rage. “Every single asset they own, every shell company, every offshore account. The freeze orders went through three seconds before I walked through those doors.”

Elora turned her head slowly, her expression remaining hard and unreadable. She looked down at Julian, who was now clutching Marcus’s polished leather shoe, begging for mercy.

“Please, Mr. Sterling,” Julian choked out, snot and tears mingling on his chin. “It was a misunderstanding. A game. Just a private matter between husband and wife—”

“You called it a marriage,” Elora interrupted, her voice dangerously quiet. “I called it a prison sentence. And your parole was denied the moment my father answered my call.”

Marcus signaled two heavily armed operatives with a subtle tilt of his chin. Without a word, the guards grabbed Julian by the collar of his ruined burgundy tuxedo, hauling him up effortlessly while he thrashed and screamed like a cornered animal. Clara tried to crawl away toward the side exit, her green gown tearing against the splintered floor, but another operator blocked her path, pressing a heavy combat boot onto the fabric to pin her in place.

“Let me go!” Clara shrieked, losing all her composure, her fingernails clawing uselessly at the polished wood. “You can’t do this! Do you know who my family is? My father will ruin you all!”

Marcus finally turned his gaze toward Clara, a thin, humorless smile touching the corners of his mouth.

“Your father’s shipping licenses were revoked twelve minutes ago, Miss Vance,” Marcus said smoothly. “By morning, your family’s estate will be seized by the federal government for tax evasion and racketeering. You are already homeless. You just don’t know it yet.”
