Chapter 12 - The Board of Shadows

The secure conference room on the top floor of a black-glass skyscraper in Zurich smelled of aged leather, expensive cigars, and old money that had never seen the light of day. Five individuals sat around a massive oval table made of petrified wood, their faces obscured by the shadows cast by low-hanging crystal sconces. Before each person lay a single dossier stamped with a red raven seal—and every dossier was now marked with a thick, crimson slash indicating total failure.
“Arthur Vance was clumsy,” a cold, modulated voice echoed from the head of the table. The speaker was a woman whose face remained entirely hidden in darkness, save for the glint of a massive diamond ring on her index finger. “He allowed personal vanity and sadistic impulses to cloud a simple operational test. He turned an asset into a spectacle.”
“The girl dismantled our entire North American logistics network in less than twelve hours,” another voice replied, male, crisp, and laced with suppressed anxiety. “Federal anti-corruption task forces are currently seizing our accounts in seven different countries. The public exposure is catastrophic.”
“Exposure is only catastrophic if you lack the narrative to control it,” the woman at the head of the table said smoothly. She leaned forward, resting her hands on the petrified wood. “Arthur thought he was breeding a victim. What he actually did was awaken the very bloodline we spent twenty years trying to bury.”
