Chapter 6 - The Sound of Sirens

The heavy silence in the ballroom broke instantly, replaced by a chaotic roar of gasps, chair-scooting, and frantic whispering. Prominent donors in the front rows clutched their pearls and leaned away from each other as if the scandal might rub off on their own tailored tuxedos. Julian Vance buried his face in his hands, realizing that no amount of legal wizardry could spin this level of public exposure.
Victoria stood paralyzed at the edge of the stage, the glittering sequins of her dress catching the harsh, rotating red-and-blue lights that suddenly began to wash through the high arched windows of the ballroom.
Sirens. Low, heavy, and undeniably close.
"You called them," Victoria whispered, her voice trembling as she stared at the young woman across the stage. It wasn't a question; it was the realization of a trap that had been closing around her for months.
"I didn't have to call them," Chloe replied, her voice remaining eerily calm as she flipped another page of the binder. "They were already tracking the IP addresses of the shell accounts. All I did was give them the key to the front door—the same door your staff tried to bar me from tonight."
Heavy footsteps echoed from the grand hallway outside the double doors. Uniformed officers, accompanied by two men in dark suits from the state financial crimes division, pushed the mahogany doors wide open. The ambient noise of the gala died down to an absolute, breathless hush.
The lead investigator, a tall man with sharp gray eyes and a heavy badge pinned to his lapel, walked purposefully down the center aisle, bypassing startled executives and glittering socialites alike. He didn't look at the crowd; his eyes were fixed entirely on the stage—specifically on Victoria.
"Victoria Sterling?" the investigator asked, his voice cutting cleanly through the quiet room as he stopped at the foot of the stairs.
Victoria swallowed hard, her mouth completely dry. She looked back toward the exit, but Julian had already melted away into the crowd, leaving her completely alone under the merciless glare of the spotlights.

"I have a warrant for your arrest," the investigator continued, pulling a folded document from his coat pocket, "on charges of wire fraud, grand larceny, and the systematic embezzlement of charitable trust funds."
